The first Thor tie-in game was something of a disaster. Not only did it receive a 1-out-of-5 score from our own Rob Keyes, but it also made its way onto our 'Most Disappointing Games of 2011' list.

So, with the sting of the first Thor: God of Thunder game fresh in our minds, we are decidedly reserved when it comes to talking about its follow-up, Thor: The Dark World. However, as the first official trailer for the game shows, this will be a very different experience than that console release.

First and foremost, Thor: The Dark World is a mobile title, developed for iOS and Android devices. In other words, even if Thor 2 is a completely forgettable experience, it has a solid chance of getting lost among the myriad other mobile titles that release every week.

That being said, there are some elements to Thor: The Dark World that look promising. Specifically the game's Diablo-esque action role-playing has us intrigued, especially if the game is like a mobile version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. The character of Thor lends himself well to that type of genre, with lighting attacks and big, sweeping hammer swings, but whether or not doing that for hours on end will be compelling is another thing.

It's also worth mentioning that the game is being developed by GameLoft, a mobile developer with their fair share of hits and misses and plenty of movie tie-in games. One of those misses, for example, was a tie-in for Iron Man 3.

Based on the trailer, it looks like Thor will have his own set of minions to help him dispatch the more formidable foes. Both Thor: The Dark World the movie, and now this game, are seeking to go bigger in scope and scale, with large battles spread out across the Nine Realms.

Nevertheless, we're not willing to write-off any potential movie tie-in curses, especially as they pertain to Marvel releases. Thor: The Dark World might be one of this Fall's most anticipated movies, but were decidedly reserved about this forthcoming mobile game.
