In the comic books by Neil Gaiman, they are known as the Endless, and how old they are or how long they have existed is a mystery. The live-action show on Netflix, The Sandman, has its interpretation of these figures. Some of them are similar to their comic book personas, others are completely different, and a few have yet to appear.

The first season of the fantasy-horror-drama featured a few appearances from notable family members with the promise of others in the future. The Sandman has plenty of material to work with from the comics, and given the basis and ideas viewers have seen so far, there's also space for totally creative characters that are unique to the live-action media.

9 Dream

Dream from the first episode of The Sandman

The main character of the show, virtually all of the drama involves or is connected to the ruler of the Dreaming, he's only referred to as Morpheus occasionally. His relatives refer to him as Dream, and the first five episodes of the first season are about how his capture and imprisonment wrecks havoc on the whole human race.

Dream not only has his six siblings to contend with but also his ex-wife, estranged son, and yet another child conceived in the Dreaming that he intends to lay claim to at a later date.

8 Death

So far, Death is every viewer's favorite family member, partly because of such a brilliant portrayal from Kirby Howell-Baptiste. The episode in which she appears to counsel and comfort her troubled brother Dream is called "The Sound of Her Wings" and the storyline in the comics have the same title.

7 Calliope

Calliope-The Sandman

If being related via marriage counts, and Morpheus is referred to as her husband several times, then Calliope makes the list. She only appears in one episode which also takes her name. She and Morpheus' child, Orpheus, is also referenced several times, especially in a short but profound bit of dialogue at the end.

It seems that Dreams hasn't seen his son in a long time and doesn't wish to, but seems more angry than afraid regarding the awkward situation. It's strongly hinted this dropped thread will be picked up another time.

6 Desire

Desire seems to be the only other family member that has some kind of gripe with or plan for Morpheus, but exactly what that is or how it will play out remains a possible storyline for season two.

This might have been the mysterious person we saw languishing in the underworld in the episode, "A Hope In Hell."

5 Despair

Despair The Sandman

She only makes a brief appearance, but it's an effective one that makes sense given the nature of this Endless. This is closer to the comic book portrayal of The Second Despair, with some differences, with the first incarnation being more of an outspoken character.

So far she's aligned with Desire to visit some malevolent plan on their brother Dream, and she'll likely appear again.

4 Daniel, The New Dream

Daniel, The New Dream The Sandman

Comic book fans would have recognized the names Lyta and Hector when they appeared in the show. If the series goes in the same direction as the comic book storyline, the child that Dream will lay claim to is Daniel, a character that will eventually take his place as the Lord of Dreams.

3 Delerium

Delerium hasn't appeared in the show yet, and there hasn't been any mention of her, but given her colorful artistic appearance in the comics, it would be thrilling to see a live-action interpretation. Given her intuitive powers, Delerium could play a pivotal role in an important episode that requires a unique way of thinking or behaving.

2 Destiny

The Sandman - Destiny

Other than his garden paths and the Cosmic Log, there's not much going on with Destiny that would work in live action, unless the angle is his lack of any kind of distinct personality. The oldest and most dedicated of the Endless, he still deserves a mention, and there are some decent writers on staff for this show that could think of an interesting role for him to play.

1 Destruction

Destruction The Endless The Sandman

An Endless who seems to be contradictory in his meaning and purpose, there have been some mentions of Destruction in the Netflix series but he has yet to arrive on screen. Unlike other members of the Family, who take their responsibilities seriously, Destruction gave up on all that a long time ago and simply left humanity to its own devices.

Despite the implied nature of Destruction, he's just a bro who enjoys the outdoors, his dog, and the many creative pursuits he takes on for which he has no talent.
