‘The Last of Us’ Is the Fastest-Selling PS3 Game Ever

The Last of Us Sales Million Copies Record

Revealed with buzz and released to acclaim, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us hasn’t strayed for a second from the path of success. The zombie-apocalypse survival epic was number 3 (out of 15) on our list of the most anticipated games of 2013. And awarding it a rare 5 out of 5 stars when it released this June, we’re wondering if the optimism wasn’t understated.

Nevertheless, the PlayStation 3 has seen many a landmark title pass its tray over the last seven years (the same, of course, could be said of the Xbox 360 and Wii as they slip into their twilight years); broken records are no small feat.

Yet according to Sony, The Last of Us has surpassed even its own sanguine expectations. The publisher has announced that the game has sold — not just shipped — 3.4 million units worldwide as of July 3rd — three weeks after its launch on June 14th. The figures have made it the fastest-selling title in the history of the PlayStation 3.

Here’s Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, on the milestone achievement:

“These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us. The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example.

We won’t belie the richness of The Last of Us’s dramatic narrative or the fun behind its visceral and clever gameplay mechanics. That said, it also helps that The Last of Us released amidst a literal and figurative dead pool of competition — one that included the aforementioned, disappointing Marvel fighter, along with major titles such as Remember Me (June 4th) and NCAA Football 14 (July 9th) that failed to reach the heights fans were hoping for.

The Last of Us Sales Fastest

Still, like finding fun in a post-apocalyptic wasteland (and of course we’re referring to exploring elegantly destroyed architecture), the success is well-earned. That the game appears to be selling at a shattering pace shines an equally bright light on its creators, gamers, and the state of the industry as whole as it nears a pivotal next-gen crossroads.

  1. Yeeeeeeaaaahhhhh!!! Hahaha I mean I was super excited for this game and it DID NOT dissapoint!! Game of the year for me without a doubt. Everything about this game was fantastic though it did have some issues but my main issue was that I couldn’t loot the humans I’ve killed but besides that this game is Incredible as I highly recommend.

  2. Wow thats a big achievement with it being as close to the end of a generation of consoles. Wish I had a ps3 right now.

    • it is literally worth buying a ps3 for. i’m still thinking about it three days after i finished it.

      • I did buy a ps3 just for this game the day it came out. i love the multiplayer.. very unique.. i think the concept of not being able to jump whenever you want is.. different..

    • rent a PS3?

  3. thats great. i remember people saying it may be a bit bad in the beginning because of E3. But if anything that probably help a lot. i cant wait to see what naughty dog has next. personally really hoping for a uncharted 4 but a new ip would be just as good. or jax 4 :P

    • @corey

Personally I want to see a uncharted 4! Obviously with drake and Elena back in the spotlight Elena is a great character and I wish she had more time in 3.

And then of course eventually id like to see a the last of us sequel ideally featuring a older wiser even more of a badass Ellie haha

      • Wow, I second everthing you just said. I hope to see all of these on the PS4.

      • I hope they dont make a sequel. the ending was some good for the last of us, it would be hard to top that, so developers will start making rash choices to try and top the original. however.. all the games from naughty dog have proved they know their stuff, so if they did make a sequel i dotn doubt it would be good. but.. i still think the last of us should be left alone. Uncharted as well. it seemed to me that they were tying things up at the end of uncharted.. sully is way too old, he deserves some rest.

  4. Last of us is so amazing

  5. Great game so far! I was having trouble finding it, sold out in stores, couldn’t rent it. Finally I found one, bought it a few days ago. I love it. The opening act is amazing IMO. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a good single player experience.

  6. The Last Of Us is an amazing experience. Naughty Dog has done very excellent in terms of making games on the PS3 Platform that are over the top and all around amazing for single player. – Scott Craighead
