The Last Of Us Trailer Will Be In-Engine

What's the sound you hear off in the distance? That's right! It's the Hype Train rolling into town, and Geoff Keighley is the conductor as he begins talking up the brand new PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us, stating that everything shown off at the Spike Video Game Awards will be in-engine.

Skepticism aside, PS3 fans should definitely be intrigued by The Last of Us. After the cryptic trailer released a few days ago, many are baffled by what the game could be, as all we have to go by is riot footage and an ant infected by the parasitic fungus cordyceps.

However, if there's one man who knows more about The Last of Us than anyone, it's definitely Geoff Keighley, and by saying everything is "in-engine," well that certainly leads us to believe this game will be a graphical marvel.

However, the graphical prowess of this new mystery title isn't the only thing Keighley has been teasing. He's also made mention that game is by an "amazing developer," and that we won't believe what has been going on behind the scenes, and that he's shocked none of this has leaked out.

Recent theories suggest that The Last of Us could have something to do with Valve or Rockstar, with some even believing it has something to do with Grand Theft Auto 5 or Half Life 3. While we wouldn't refute the possibility of the announcement being tied to either developer, the possibility of Half Life 3 or Grand Theft Auto 5 going PS3 exclusive seems highly unlikely given how successful both franchises are as multiplatform titles.

At this point, The Last of Us and its developer remain unknown quantities. When Keighley talks about "what's been going on behind the scenes," we're lead to believe that the title comes from a third-party developer. However, mention of the title being from Sony, as well as the game's alleged graphical prowess, lead this writer to believe it could be the new IP from Sony's graphical juggernauts, Guerrilla Games. In any case, we won't find out until the Video Game Awards air this Saturday.

UPDATE: The first screenshot of The Last of Us has just been revealed on the game's website. If the image, like the VGA reveal, is in-engine, The Last of Us could be a very good looking game indeed. The Last of Us is currently in development for PS3.
