Remastered versions of games can be a tricky lot to judge, particularly when the original release is just over a year old. More and more, this seems to be the case with The Last of Us Remastered. While the original game acted as the perfect swan song for the PS3, many wonder if the generational jump will be enough to warrant a second purchase.

Going into a remastered release like that of The Last of Us Remastered, the prime expectation is that the graphical fidelity will see a significant boost. For a game that saw its initial release just over a year ago, many gamers are questioning whether the graphical difference will be noticeable. With the news that the game will be running at 60 FPS, The Last of Us will most definitely take on a different look, but judging by the recently-released screenshots, the apocalypse is looking more gorgeous than ever before.

Posted to the PlayStation Blog along with some early impressions, the latest screenshots are not likely to disappoint and help to shed some light on what gamers can expect from the game's release later this month. The impressions applaud the bump in resolution citing a significant reduction of "jaggies" and impressive, high-res textures.

While some gamers are sure to take exception to the shift to 60 FPS and the smoother movements that will follow, according to the impressions, the change is hardly jarring and doesn't feel artificial as some might expect. Further helping to improve the overall graphical fidelity of the title, the lighting engine also seems to have seen an improvement, boosting the effectiveness of shadows throughout the game's post-apocalyptic environment.

Coming alongside a pre-release price drop, it's evident that Sony wants to get The Last of Us Remastered into gamers' hands, even if they've previously made the plunge. The trailer is no doubt impressive and there is a good chance that a movie based on the game will see the light of day. Even if the game never sees the release of a sequel, this apocalyptic landscape still has more than enough life left in it.

Is this jump in graphical fidelity enough for you to warrant a purchase of The Last of Us Remastered? What game would you like to see remastered next?
