The Last of Us Remastered Confirmed

In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, a mysterious banner appeared that seemingly confirmed The Last of Us Remastered was coming to PS4. However, without an official announcement from Sony or developer Naughty Dog, many questioned whether the banner had appeared by mistake or if it was actually some sort of stealth reveal.

While we will likely never know what actually transpired, Naughty Dog has finally come out to confirm that, yes, The Last of Us will be making the jump to the PS4 in a Remastered edition. As well, the developer revealed that The Last of Us Remastered will hit digital storefronts and retail chains this summer.

Naughty Dog also confirmed the $60 price tag revealed by the banner, but promised that The Last of Us Remastered will be packed full of content. The PS4 re-release will include the excellent Left Behind DLC expansion, the Abandoned Territories multiplayer map pack, and a new pack called Reclaimed Territories that Naughty Dog will apparently talk more about very soon.

In addition to the previously released DLC, The Last of Us Remastered will also include a commentary track for all of the game's cinematics that features insight from Creative Director Neil Druckmann, Joel voice actor Troy Baker, and Ellie voice actor Ashley Johnson.

But wait, there's more! Any gamers who pre-order The Last of Us Remastered will unlock a handful of new upgrades for the single player campaign and for their multiplayer character including:

  • 100 Supply Points (XP) for use in Factions mode
  • Two special bonus skins for Joel and Ellie which will be unlocked after your complete the single player campaign
  • Increased Crafting Speed for use in the Single Player Campaign
  • Increased Healing Speed for use in the Single Player Campaign
  • 9mm Reload Speed Increase Upgrade for use in the Single Player Campaign
  • Rifle Clip Capacity Increase Upgrade for use in the Single Player Campaign

And if you pre-order directly from the PlayStation store, Sony will throw in early access to three higher level multiplayer skills and upgrades.

While the opportunity to re-experience one of the best reviewed games from this past console generation is certainly a major appeal for The Last of Us Remastered, the fact that Naughty Dog has developed this port in-house has us all the more impressed. In most cases, these HD (or in this case ultra-HD) remakes are passed off to a lesser-known developer, but clearly Naughty Dog wanted to do ensure they live up to fans' expectations.

We're still not completely sold on the idea of paying $60 for a re-release but we reckon there are a ton of fans out there that are. Not to mention those who never played The Last of Us on PS3. For those two groups, it sounds like Naughty Dog has put together a pretty substantial package.

Will you be picking up The Last of Us Remastered? Where does The Last of Us rank among last generation's games for you?
