The Last Guardian Unlikely for 2013

Sony's PlayStation 4 conference has come and gone and lots of great games have been announced. But while the company dropped some pretty heavy info bombs, there were many questions left unanswered and some surprise no-shows. Team Ico’s absence from the event was a substantial missed opportunity for Sony and they know it.

After the success of Shadow of the Colossus, Team Ico knew that their next project would have to be something even bigger. Head of the studio Fumito Ueda conceptualized The Last Guardian in 2007, based off of the players' interactions with Agro, the protagonist's horse in Shadow of the Colossus.

The rumored cancellation of the game left us fearing that there might never be a third game for the series, especially after GameStop perpetuated these rumors in 2011 by informing fans that the game was "canceled by the vendor." Sony quickly dismissed this rumor fortunately, and in the past six years little bits of info have leaked steadily about the long-delayed game, along with numerous trailers showcasing gameplay footage. These instances have left many fans wondering, if so much has been accomplished, why don't we have a release date?

PS4 PS3 Saves Transfer Backwards Compatibility

During the PS4 unveiling last week, Sony president Shuhei Yoshida wanted to avert any criticism about The Last Guardian, and offered a formal apology in an interview with Kotaku.

"I apologize to people who are waiting for the game. Ueda-san posted that he's still working on it, that he's creative-directing it and that the team in the Japan studios are working hard. We are waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian."

Yoshida was also asked whether they would be moving the game from the PlayStation 3, as originally intended, to the PlayStation 4. Although this would seem almost a necessity at this point after years of delays, he merely stated that they're "going to talk about it when we can."

E3 2013 is likely going to be the place for Team Ico's release date announcement, as we have confirmed that there are several unannounced PS4 titles to be revealed later this year. After six long years of torture for loyal Team Ico supporters, it's about time Sony give the fans what they want. Do you expect The Last Guardian will be announced as a PS4 launch title?
