‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Coming Summer 2012; World Premiere Trailer At VGAs

When Peter Parker returns next Summer, the big screen won’t be the only place to catch him. The Amazing Spider-Man, the game, takes place directly after the events of The Amazing Spider-Man, the movie.

Developer Beenox’s chance at redemption after the disappointing Spider-Man: Edge of Time swings into action Summer 2012 (likely right around the movie’s July 3rd release date), while a world premiere trailer for the game will air during Saturday’s Spike Video Game Awards.

The Amazing Spider-Man was revealed at last October’s New York Comic-Con, where the first teaser trailer for the game made its debut. To the delight of longtime Spider-Man video game aficionados, open world web swinging — notably absent from both Edge of Time and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions — makes its return in The Amazing Spider-Man, and it’s looking better than ever!

For a new look at Spidey’s web-swinging abilities, check out this teaser for the full trailer set to premiere during the VGAs.

As previously mentioned, The Amazing Spider-Man doesn’t recreate the events of the upcoming film, but rather is an ” epilogue story” with an all new narrative. To help ensure that the game has a tale worth telling, Beenox and Activision have turned to the talents of Seamus Kevin Fahey (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, Battlestar Galactica). Concept art for The Amazing Spider-Man shows shows both an imposing OSCORP building and what appears to be Peter Parker’s apartment. Do these images offer clues to the game’s story? Perhaps we’ll know come Saturday night.

Still, as much as players crave a strong story to go along with all the web-swinging, web-slinging action, it is the return to an open-world, swing anywhere design that has most fans clamoring for Beenox’s latest. That aspect of the series arguably hit its peak first time out of the gate with Treyarch‘s Spider-Man 2: The Game. Now, after Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Batman: Arkham City, the time may finally be right for Spider-Man to reclaim the trophy for “Best Open World Traversal Mechanics.”

As today’s teaser makes abundantly clear, virtual New York looks great in The Amazing Spider-Man. That said, looks can be deceiving and Beenox has yet to deliver a truly great Spider-Man game. Can the third time be the charm for Spidey’s current gaming caretakers? Fingers crossed.

The Amazing Spider-Man releases Summer of 2012 for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, and 3DS.
