After Beenox's last Spider-Man game, Edge of Time, left something to be desired, gamers have been chomping at the bit to see how the developer plans to correct those mistakes. While part of the problem might have been a shortened development cycle, Beenox is at it again with The Amazing Spider-Man, a new game based on this summer's forthcoming film.

The VGAs saw a new trailer revealed and it looks none too different from Beenox's Shattered Dimensions or Edge of Time. Rather than following along with the film's plot, this game appears to be telling a new story, one that facilitates a return to the open world sandbox genre. Oscorp has attempted to cleanse the streets of New York with mechanical creatures, but, as they are wont to do, things have gone awry and Spider-Man must swing in to save the day.

Overall the trailer doesn't show much in the way of that open world gameplay, but the combat particulars look just like Beenox's previous efforts. Nonetheless the giant mechanical robot enemy has us intrigued even if it isn't one of Spider-Man's iconic enemies.

Still the question remains, can Beenox escape the presumed shortcomings that are inherent to movie tie-in games, especially ones that are based on comic book superheroes? Perhaps with an open world to experience, and a storyline that focuses on one Spider-Man, Beenox will be able to find their groove again.

What do you think of The Amazing Spider-Man? Can Beenox regain their footing after the misstep that was Edge of Time with a movie tie-in?

The Amazing Spider-Man is expected to release alongside the feature film, which debuts July 3, 2012.
