The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer VGAs

After Beenox’s last Spider-Man game, Edge of Time, left something to be desired, gamers have been chomping at the bit to see how the developer plans to correct those mistakes. While part of the problem might have been a shortened development cycle, Beenox is at it again with The Amazing Spider-Man, a new game based on this summer’s forthcoming film.

The VGAs saw a new trailer revealed and it looks none too different from Beenox’s Shattered Dimensions or Edge of Time. Rather than following along with the film’s plot, this game appears to be telling a new story, one that facilitates a return to the open world sandbox genre. Oscorp has attempted to cleanse the streets of New York with mechanical creatures, but, as they are wont to do, things have gone awry and Spider-Man must swing in to save the day.

Check out the trailer below:

Overall the trailer doesn’t show much in the way of that open world gameplay, but the combat particulars look just like Beenox’s previous efforts. Nonetheless the giant mechanical robot enemy has us intrigued even if it isn’t one of Spider-Man’s iconic enemies.

Still the question remains, can Beenox escape the presumed shortcomings that are inherent to movie tie-in games, especially ones that are based on comic book superheroes? Perhaps with an open world to experience, and a storyline that focuses on one Spider-Man, Beenox will be able to find their groove again.

What do you think of The Amazing Spider-Man? Can Beenox regain their footing after the misstep that was Edge of Time with a movie tie-in?

The Amazing Spider-Man is expected to release alongside the feature film, which debuts July 3, 2012.

  1. Is it wrong that the most striking parts of any Spider-Man game trailer for me are the color schemes?

This one is dark, so I’m optimistic. :)

    • Oh, I really want to this to turn out well, but too much of an emphasis on combat is apt to kill the fun for me.

  2. Does no one here remember the spider slayers?

Like Scorpian they were created by J. Jonah Jameson to hunt down and kill Spidey? The robots in this game look like a new version of that.

    • I was gonna mention them. :) I never knew JJ funded their production though. That guy’s a menace.

Anyway, this battle looks like a pretty cool setpiece. I hope this game turns out good!

  3. well it looked pretty good. Looks like another Web of Shadows…hmmm make the animations less stiff, more vibrant such as SM3′s, let us interact with the city and the NPCs a lot more..and even give us a first person view cause u teased it in the movie trailer and it looked epic…and I’m all down for it.

    • I agree. While SM3 wasn’t the prettiest game, it was good for it’s time. The animations for Spidey’s movements in that game, where slick and smooth. Also, interacting with city and NPC’s adds more adventure elements, and I’m all for that. But I kinda disagree with the first person thing. If possible, it seems like a bad idea, considering how much flips and stuff he does. Plus, while Shattered Dimensions may have been good, the 1st person definitely was a bad edition.

  4. My only gripe with games like these…Where are the Fantastic 4 and X-Men…and Dare-Devil…and all the other NY based heroes from the Marvel universe? Holiday?

  5. Happy 2012 new year,Merry Christmas ,Christmas top gift

  6. reminds me of web of shadows the way the gameplay is.

  7. Looks really good. Finally, the Spider Slayer’s are being brought into the games. The small bits of combat in the trailer look cool, and the graphics are fantastic. I can’t wait to see what other villains are in the rest of the game.

  8. Can’t watch it… Doesn’t work for me :/

  9. Will be PC version for this game?! Somebody know anything about it?!

  10. ALL I WANT IS A SPIDERMAN GAME LIKE BATMAN WHERE HE ENCOUNTERS HIS BEST VILLIANS NOT ROBOTS MADE FROM HIS VILLIANS. WHY COULDNT IT BE JUST GREEN GOBLIN AFTER HIM AND NOT HIS ROBOTS…I MEAN SERIOUSLY ITS SPIDERMAN…DONT LIKE IT ONE BIT
