Terraria 2 Announcement

Sharpen those pickaxes, and start reinforcing those homes because Terraria 2 is on its way. Since the original Terraria’s initial, and quite successful, PC release over two years ago, developer Re-Logic’s side-scrolling adventure/RPG has managed to maintain a consistent level of community enthusiasm and excitement that few games ever receive. Through recent releases on a variety of other platforms, including XBLA, PSN and even mobile platforms, the fan-base has grown even larger, with new players getting a chance to explore, battle and create in the unique 2D world the game offers.

It’s only natural that the army of fans Terraria has amassed continue to clamor for more. More fixes. More content. More items. More everything. Luckily for everyone still jonesing for more to do in the already near-limitless world, designer and programmer Andrew Spinks has confirmed that more is on the way. In fact, some of it is already here.

Spinks, who at one time stated he was stepping away from Terraria to spend time with his family and work on something new, recently let it spill in an interview that he is indeed working on a full sequel to Terraria. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’m super excited about starting Terraria 2. It’s a ways out, but it’s gonna have a lot in common with the original. It’s gonna be quite different as well. I really want to expand on the whole Terraria universe.

There’s a lot of stuff I’m locked into with Terraria. The way loot works, the way character progression works. In Terraria 2, I really want to have infinite worlds so you’re not just stuck to one world. You can travel anywhere. I want more biome diversity in that, too. There’s a lot of stuff [I want to add and change].”

Certainly all the long-time fans who have been swinging their virtual pickaxes since the beginning will be glad to know that there is some truly fresh content in the works. Of course, “a ways out” is not an ideal time frame for fans who are ravenous for more, but there is still good news to be had. The Terraria 1.2 update has arrived, and it adds a staggering amount of content.

Our review already applauded the game’s vast array of gameplay features, but the new update takes it even further. Boasting more than a handful of mechanical upgrades, over a 100 new enemies, new bosses, new music tracks and host of new items, the substantial amount of fresh goodies in this update should keep players busy for a while whey they wait for Terraria 2. PCGamesN has compiled a pretty comprehensive list of all the changes here.

An update of this scope and caliber doesn’t come along that often. Especially for free and for a game that only cost $10 in the first place. It will be hard for any player to be disappointed or feel cheated once they start sinking their teeth into Terraria 1.2.

Have any of you Ranters had a chance to jump back into Terraria’s virtual sandbox now that it’s all shiny and new? Have you uncovered any new secrets or bosses that got the best of you? Does the prospect of Terraria 2 have you ready to bust out the money hose or was the original game’s different progression style and pace not to your liking? Let us know below.

Terraria is currently available on Steam, PSN, XBLA, iOS, Android and PS Vita. Platform and release details for Terraria 2 are TBA.
