As promised, developer Telltale Games revealed more about its upcoming Batman adaptation at a special SXSW panel. Unfortunately, the studio did not offer up any new footage, but they did present fans with a release window: summer. That’s right, the first of five episodes for Batman: A Telltale Games Series will be available in just a few short months.

In addition to revealing a release window for Batman, Telltale also shared a few design decisions behind the game. Most notably, the developers revealed that players will be able to approach certain situations as either Bruce Wayne or Batman, and that the characters will interact differently based on the player character.

It’s important to note, though, that this is still a Batman game, and therefore players will have to spend some time as the Dark Knight regardless. But the prospect of exploring scenes as Bruce Wayne, and seeing how that changes the dynamic and the dialogue sounds very interesting.

To that end, Telltale made it a point to explain why there hasn’t been much (read: nearly any) footage of the game shown thus far. As the studio explains it, Telltale is a script and story first company, and therefore it is important to nail those elements out of the gate. It’s only once the product is close to releasing that the developer can start showing off gameplay and screenshots.

What players can expect is a visual style that keeps in line with the Batman comics, specifically the work of Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams. These seminal Batman artists and writers are some of the biggest names associated with the Batman brand, so drawing inspiration from their work should appease fans.

On the flip side, Telltale’s fans should be happy to hear that Batman will feature an updated version of the studio’s development technology. While Telltale brand of games typically showcase high quality writing and voice acting, their engines typically leave something to be desired. Frame rate problems and weird glitches are still an issue for these games, as noted by our review of The Walking Dead: Michonne.

If there were to be a property to debut some updated technology on, Batman makes sense. The Dark Knight is held in high regards among gamers thanks to Rocksteady Studios' Arkham games. And pop culture fans are soon to be reacquainted with the character in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

But don’t expect this version of Batman to mirror the one featured in the motion picture; this will be an M-rated game. In fact, Telltale specifically likened the game to an R-rated movie, suggesting fans will get to see a grittier version of Batman than they are used to seeing in other non-comic book media.

For now, it’s the waiting game, but Telltale has seemingly done enough to whet the appetite of Batfans around the world. And for Telltale fans there is The Walking Dead: Michonne to keep them occupied until summer.
