Kojima Unleashes First Peace Walker Trailer

If you’ve been following Hideo Kojima on Twitter, you’ll know he spent the last few days painstakingly rehearsing his moves for a ‘live’ in-game walk-through trailer for his upcoming PSP title, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Apparently this is the first of several live trailers he, and his team, plan to release until the game’s launch.

The first trailer, “For Starters:  A Solo Sneaking Mission”, is now complete, and available to watch with your eyes below.

Video Game Frustration & Why We Continue to Play

Video Game Frustration & Why We Continue to Play

When you walk into my old bedroom, the first thing you will see is the side of a white dresser with black knobs and a black top. If you walk around to the front, you will quickly notice that the wood on the front is dented in several places and the paint is heavily chipped, revealing the wood underneath. How did this happen? Would it help if I mentioned my television and all my gaming systems that used to sit on top?

The front of that dresser bears the scars of years of video game frustration. It has played host to three systems’ worth of curse words, elevated blood pressure, and the occasional almost-kicking of a small animal. A veteran of aggression, it has witnessed the infuriating A.I. of Tecmo Super Bowl, the laughable difficulty of Battletoads, those stupid floating barrels in Donkey Kong Country, and the immeasurable real-life threat to friendships posed by Goldeneye and NFL Blitz. More controllers have hit the front of that dresser than all of the Wiimotes without wrist straps in the world. And that’s a fact.

Sony Weekly Update (Jan. 21-27)

Another Thursday, another update to the Sony PlayStation Store, and another Game Rant Weekly Update.

The bonanza of high-profile Q1 titles are beginning to arrive, while Xbox 360 users will undoubtedly be gloating about the release of BioWare’s Mass Effect 2, PS3 owners won’t be left without their own game to tout - MAG, formerly Massive Action Game, will be released this Tuesday. The title, which allows 256 players to participate in a strategic, class based, FPS battle recently released their public beta to mixed impressions as well as a number of technical problems.

The Video Game Protagonist

The Video Game Protagonist

One of the most important things for me in a video game isn’t how good it looks, how great the story is, or even if it has multiplayer. It’s the hero. Why? It’s just as important to have an interesting protagonist in a story as it is to have a story that drives the hero in the first place. From Super Mario Bros. all the way to Uncharted, the protagonist I play often has a large impact on how I enjoy the story.

Why is the protagonist of a video game important to my enjoyment? Because he is my (and I hate to use the phrase now) avatar that connects me to the world. And if the game I’m playing isn’t a RPG where I can customize most aspects of my player-character, I damn sure want to be able to manipulate somebody who’s interesting. I never really enjoyed playing games with boring heroes, cookie-cutter copies of that macho guy who has to save the world because he’s the only one who can.

No Metal Gear Movie Anytime Soon

No Metal Gear Movie Anytime Soon

Steve at Collider interviewed Mike De Luca last week and in their hour-long conversation they touched on the subject of the Metal Gear Solid movie. With the film industry making a push into video game adaptations and it possibly becoming the next comic book movie genre, it seems like a no brainer that the hot property is ripe for a film adaptation.

According to De Luca however, things are seemingly on hold for the time being as not everyone’s fully on board, mainly the video game companies. In this case, the developer is Konami and it looks like they maybe fearful of letting a Hollywood studio adapt their prized property considering the history of quality in video game movies.

Paul W.S. Anderson Eyes Castlevania (Again)

Paul W.S. Anderson Eyes Castlevania (Again)

I can think of no other video game franchise that I am bigger fan of then the Konami classic Castlevania.  So naturally you would expect that I would be delighted to hear that a live action feature film based on the vampire hunting videogame franchise is in the works… or so you would think.

The Castlevania feature film is supposed to focus on the origin of the endless battle between the Belmont clan and the dark lord Dracula. The project has been trying to get off the ground for years, with a revolving door of directors/producers and writers. As far as acting goes, the only name I’ve ever heard attached to this picture was that of Johnathan Frakes (Star Trek: TNG).  However, now there is some new information courtesy of the boys over at Bloody-Disgusting.

The Metal Gear Saga Continues With The PSP

The Metal Gear Saga Continues With The PSP

Metal Gear guru Hideo Kojima is back with a new installment in his epic series, exclusive to the PSP. A fantastic 10-minute trailer came out in September from the Tokyo Game Show and from what was shown, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker looks great. The graphics are easily on par with PS2 Metal Gear games and the storyline looks just as melodramatic as ever.

This installment of the series takes place in the twilight years of the Cold War. The main character will be our favorite bad-ass Big Boss and he looks like he’s bringing some friends with. The game will also be featuring Private Military Companies like Metal Gear Solid 4 and will be set in South America.
