GR Pick: Real Life Portal Gun

Youtube user freddiew pays homage to Valves’ hit game Portal. Most of his videos are gaming or tech related comedy, and this one just had to be shared. The video shows the hilarious consequences should a Portal gun be purchasable in the mail.

GR Pick: The First Ten Years of PS2

Yesterday was the tenth birthday of the Playstation 2, a very long time in console lifespans. I’m sure all of us have had or played a PS2 in our lives at one point or another and with good reason; It’s one of the best consoles ever released.

Some of the best games I’ve ever played came out on the PS2, including God of War, Disgaea, Final Fantasy X, and Metal Gear Solid 2, which is the reason I bought a PS2 in the first place. Our friends at Kotaku whipped up a very neat time line of the history of the Playstation 2 and I recommend you check it out.

GR Pick: Modern Warfare 2 Fail Montage

I know that Battlefield: Bad company 2 comes out today, but this video isn’t really promoting Modern Warfare 2, as much as it is simply showing some great moments of failure.  We’ve all experienced disappointing times like these, and this video not only reminds us of them, it also provides some serious laughs.

Set to the perfect musical choice, this video is a must see for fans of, well, hilarity.

GR Picks: Mass Effect 2 Hip-Hop Tribute

Are you a fan of Mass Effect 2 but felt as though the title was short on hip-hop influence?

Enter Kabuto the Python with his tribute to planet scanning titled “Those Minerals” (WARNING: some explicit content):

Here’s an excerpt from the lyrics – for those of you at work:

“Peep it, I’ll break it down so you can absorb it (okay)
You need to mind planets’ minerals and do it from orbit (yo)
Some good advice, and you’re too much of a noob to ignore it (ay)
You’ll get stranded with no fuel if you foolishly floor it
I used to rock microphones rhyming in a stadium (okay)
These days i launch probes mining for palladium (no doubt)”

GR Pick [Video]: Cloud in Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is an immensly popular series with a huge cult following.

Of course there are going to be some characters that others feel should have a place on Brawl’s roster, and that is why hackers are awesome. Recently, they managed to put Final Fantasy’s Cloud Strife in as a playable character, and it looks pretty solid.

GR Pick [Video]: Nintendo Wii Greasy Chip Fail

We have all seen Wii accidents on YouTube; Smashed television sets, bruised bodies – all mere side effects of playing Wii without the wrist strap. Of course, we wouldn’t need the stupid wrist strap if Nintendo didn’t make the damn things so slippery!

GR Pick [Video]: Incredibly Uplifting Fan-Made Mario Ad

2010 is here, and with the new decade comes the opportunity to reflect on how far console video-gaming has progressed over the last 30 years.

What better franchise to look at than Mario? With the recent release of the retro-inspired New Super Mario Bros. Wii, as well as the upcoming Mario Galaxy 2, the charming platform-hopping plumber shows us just how relevant he still is in an industry over-flowing with post-apocalyptic first person shooters and sandbox-dramas inspired by the shady side of real life.

Video of the Week: Modern Warfare 2 Ninja Kill

Video of the Week: Modern Warfare 2 Ninja Kill

It’s about time we start sharing cool gameplay videos, something I’ve been meaning to do for week. Today marks the first day we conduct our Video of the Week feature where we’ll share any cool or funny gameplay videos we find or can think of for that week.

Two of the game ranters chimed in a few days back with a suggestion for this week’s video, coming from Modern Warfare 2, showing off a very cocky player putting on a show and performing a ninja kill.

Check out the video below and see why war games do not equal reality.

GR Pick [Video]: Christmas Light Hero

As the Christmas holiday season nears and gamers wait to see what new titles may lay wrapped under the tree, one little boy makes the most of the season by making Guitar Hero a festive event.

Why play it indoors where it’s warm, comfortable and playable on a television when you can play outside, on your driveway in the cold?

Check out Christmas Light Hero below (not associated with Activision).

GR Pick [Video]: Waluigi Joins Smash Bros. Brawl!

GR Pick [Video]: Waluigi Joins Smash Bros. Brawl!

No, this isn’t the announcement of DLC for Super Smash Bros. Brawl (as sad as that is to say), but it is still pretty cool. For all the fans who wanted Waluigi – Wario’s best man friend – to be playable in Brawl, you should check out what some hackers were able to do. They re-skinned Capt. Falcon with the Waluigi assist trophy and it seems to have worked rather well with only some occasional glitches.

Check it out below!

GR Pick [Video]: Saving Private Robin?

GR Pick [Video]: Saving Private Robin?

Even celebrities love their classic games.

On a recent episode of Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night, Robin Williams is questioned about his love of gaming. He says he is a big fan of Call of Duty and has been “playing for a long time.”

In the video, he talks about the age gap between himself and a 10-year-old, and how he gets the occasional foreign gamer. Two of his children, Cody and Zelda, are named after classic video games, the latter being quite clear. He does not specify on Cody’s namesake, but does make his love for the legend very obvious.

Super Mario World Marriage Proposal

Written on October 22nd, 2009 by Ben Kendrick

Super Mario World Marriage Proposal

On October 15, Brad Smith proposed to his girlfriend Lisa inside Super Mario World. Using Lunar Magic, an SNES add-on that allows gamers to alter ROM files in order to create, and then play, their own levels and content through an emulator, Smith spelled “Lisa… Will You Marry Me?” in gold coins. She said “Yes,” though we’re not totally convinced it’s a victory for gaming culture, as the bride-to-be starts the video with the line “Why am I playing this?”

Smith secretly taped the proposal and the original video reached over 200,000 views before it was pulled from YouTube – that version is still available on IGN with a clearer look at the modifications to the level; though discerning viewers who want the complete experience can find that a longer, “more emotional,” version has recently appeared on Smith’s YouTube profile.
