Gears of War sets a high bar for military sci-fi, combining solid gameplay mechanics with a developed and complex story and a memorable cast of characters. The Gears of War series has been among the most popular and most played on Xbox Live since its creation, thanks to its cover-based shooting and variety of multiplayer modes, including both co-op and versus modes.

As protagonist Marcus Fenix, players explore planets and mow down waves of alien enemies with a variety of futuristic weaponry—all in the hopes of destroying the Locust Queen and preventing the invasive Locusts from spreading.

The series has been highly praised for its attention to detail in the sound and art departments, as well as continuous improvements made to other aspects of the game, including both story and multiplayer. Though Gears of War: Judgment, the fourth entry in the series, was not as well received as prior games, it was still viewed as a solid prequel. A fifth in the series is currently under development for the Xbox One, by Microsoft and Black Tusk studios.
