Super Smash Bros Wii U Star Fox

It won't be long now until fans are familiarized with every character, stage, mode and collectible featured within the new Super Smash Bros. games for the Wii U and 3DS. Despite the handheld iteration arriving in just a few short months, there's still an ample amount of content that hasn't been revealed.

Case-in-point: Today a new stage based on Star Fox was revealed for the Wii U version of the highly anticipated fighting game.

Taking inspiration from past installments, Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai hinted via MiiVerse that the beloved Great Fox battleground that's been featured or revamped in every entry of the series so far will once again be returning. While Sakurai didn't showcase any fighters doing battle atop of the ship, he did allude to the fact that players will be doing just that when the game launches later this year.

Super Smash Bros Wii U Star Fox Stage

As the post suggests, this will be a new take on the Sector Z and Corneria stages that many longtime players hold dear to their hearts. The overall look of the battlefield, however, is significantly different and sleeker than either of the aforementioned maps. This is because the new stage is based on Star Fox: Assault which originally debuted on the Nintendo GameCube in 2005.

Since this was the last console Star Fox title released up to this point in time, it makes sense that Sakurai would want to make reference to the game. An even funnier coincidence is that, like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, Namco (now Bandai Namco) actually helped Nintendo by developing Assault for the company, so a reference to the game via an official stage is all too fitting.

It's also possible that the new stage could hint at a new Star Fox character joining the fray alongside Fox McCloud — although we fully expect Falco and Wolf to make a return. The fact that the series is ramping up to debut on the Wii U certainly doesn't hurt the chances of a newcomer either, but only time will tell what Nintendo has in store for Smash fans.

Are you excited to scrap aboard the Great Fox once more?
