Countdown to New ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Challenger Begins

Published 3 months ago by

October comes closer and closer with every passing day, and with its arrival comes a barrage of video games that fans the world over have been anticipating with bated breath. One title that’ll finally be making its debut in the beginning of October is Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, and while the hype train for that title (and its Wii U counterpart) has been meticulously cared for by Nintendo thus far, there are still a number of unknown variables pertaining to the game that have yet to be detailed.

Some of the surprises that gamers have been anticipating are the inevitable reveals of additional fighters planned to be present in the new Super Smash Bros. games, and while Nintendo has done a good job of revealing playable combatants (the latest being Pac-Man), many believe that there’s still much of the roster waiting to be revealed. While the definitive number of characters is still unknown, Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has posted a countdown to a new challenger’s unveiling.

Scheduled to be announced on the Monday following EVO 2014 (the acclaimed fighting game tournament that Nintendo is officially sponsoring this year) wraps up, the fact that this new fighter really could be anyone from Nintendo’s vast catalogue of mascots and properties has started to sink in. The footage of the new challenger will be hitting at 7 a.m. PT on July 14, 2014. Based on comments made by Sakurai in his latest MiiVerse post, however, it sounds like there aren’t many newcomers left to showcase after this reveal.

Regardless of what awaits fans of Super Smash Bros. this Monday, a character reveal has never been formally scheduled in the past. This could mean that a highly requested character, third-party newcomer, or revamped veteran (we’re still hoping for Mewtwo) could be at the center of this announcement, so speculation is sure to be firing on all cylinders.

Which character do believe will officially be joining the roster this Monday? Do you think it’ll be a revamped veteran, another third-party representative, or a wholly original newcomer? Let us know in the comments below!

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS will be arriving on October 2, 2014, while the Wii U version is set to hit during Holiday 2014.

  1. lol… they hate evo so much they cant even reveal at evo… thats just sad :(

    • Nintendo definitely doesn’t hate EVO (it’s sponsoring the event this year), but I think the company wants to maintain control of its character reveals.

Keeping the trailer exclusive to its YouTube channel is smart business. It’s the only place fans can tune in to see a new fighter unveiled — cutting out others from profiting on ad revenue from their announcement in the process.

      • evo is the biggest fighting game tournament of the year. it has fans from all over the world and the smash games are very popular at evo. why they dont wanna reveal it to the crowd before the smash finals is strange to say the least. MKX is going to reveal and i assume KI will reveal a S2 character. capcom will probably announce ps4 version of USF4. they are revealed USF4 last year at evo

        • That’s all well and good and no one would dare say EVO isn’t the biggest fighting game tournament of the year, but Nintendo prefers to unveil its own content on its own stage. That doesn’t mean the company hates EVO, nor could it since it’s an official sponsor of the event.

          • after last year i cant agree with you on that one lol

          • “We hate this event, let’s give it money this year.”

            … Come on now.

  2. Dillon from Dillon’s Rolling Western. That would be pretty cool

    • Yes did not enjoy the game that much, but he would be a good character.

    • He’s already confirmed as an assist trophy.

  3. Mike Jones from Startropics or Ganondorf

  4. Geno or we riot.

    • Oh please. Geno is so irrelevant and his fanbase is too small to even dare approach the roster. If anything, Mewtwo needs to make a comeback to the Smash Bros. games. That’s just my personal opinion anyways. Also, consider the fact that other characters with also higher fanbases, such as Shulk from Xenoblade or Bayonetta from… well, Bayonetta, have a better chance at getting into the game, although I think it is more unlikely because the Smash Bros. community flipped s*** when Mewtwo wasn’t in Brawl, so I believe this is the time for redemption. Mewtwo for Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U!

  5. ridley or riot

  6. Come on Robin(my unit) from FE: Awakening!

    • Robin is in! but more importantly than these 3 or 4 FE losers, CAPTAIN FALCON!
