‘Super Smash Bros.’ on Wii 2: 9 Things We’d Like to See

Super Smash Bros Project Cafe

Every time Nintendo is on the verge of pulling the proverbial curtain off of a new console there is obviously some excitement amongst gamers, but one thing that many long-time fans of Nintendo already realize is that where there’s a new console – there’s a new Super Smash Bros.

Yes, Smash is infamous for appearing once every console generation, so it’s very easy to assume that Nintendo is already prepping a new game for their new hardware. Unsurprisingly, a recent rumor states that Nintendo is planning on revealing Super Smash Bros. 4 for the Wii 2 during their big press conference in just under a week’s time.

The series is immensly popular all across the world, and we here at Game Rant love it to death. However, just like every video game, there are certain things that we wish we could change – and see added to the next installment. That’s why I’ve taken the liberty to see what everyone in the Smash community would love to see added to Super Smash Bros. 4 when it’s finally released on Nintendo‘s soon-to-be-announced system.

What could Nintendo possibly do to their fan-favourite franchise to make it even better? Read on to find out our suggestions.

1080p Graphics

We liked the graphics in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but when all was said and done the game was still only running on the lacklustre capabilities of the Wii. Fortunately, Nintendo’s new console is said to be even stronger than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which means that the next Smash Bros. will logically see a graphical update as well. I couldn’t imagine something more jaw droppingly beautiful than the chaos of Smash Bros. captured in glorious 1080p HD, and that seems like it’s almost a guaranteed option when the game finally comes to Project Cafe.

Enhanced Online Play

Another benefit of having Super Smash Bros. 4 release on a next generation console is the promise of some solid online capabilities. Brawl did a great job of providing an online option on the Wii, but it’s still not even comparable to any game on the Xbox 360 or PS3. We expect a lot more from Nintendo’s Project Cafe though, and the next game should deliver at least the bare necessities of any decent online game. One huge feature that needs to appear is the ability to talk to other people you’re playing. Maybe even Project Cafe’s rumored camera-embedded controller would be a great way to communicate with other gamers.

Super Smash Bros 4 characters

More Characters

The roster is one of the most debated elements of Super Smash Bros., and it will surely be a topic of discussion for the next installment. A new Smash Bros. obviously means that there will be new additions to the roster, and maybe even some cuts, but you can expect the overall roster size to jump from the 35 characters that appeared in Brawl to an even higher total. It would be great to see all of the fighters return for the fourth installment (including the characters who were cut in the transition to Brawl), but this likely won’t be the case.

The more the merrier I was always told, but of course there has to be a limit to the roster and capping it between 40-45 combatants sounds just about right to us. There are some fans who would love to see the roster grow to over 50 fighters, but this is just unrealistic. Besides, there has to be some characters left to appear in future installments down the road. As long as the developers follow our list of the top characters that should be in Smash Bros. then we’ll be more than happy.

3rd Party Characters

The addition of 3rd party characters was the reason that gamers were finally able to settle the school yard dispute of Mario vs. Sonic, and you can be sure that more of these characters will make an appearance in the near future. One thing that was a little annoying though, was that the third party characters in the roster only filled up two spaces. I was even more surprised when Smash had Sonic, but didn’t include a character like Knuckles when he would have fit the game perfectly.

There are quite a few companies that share a good relationship with Nintendo and I’m sure would love to have their characters featured in the next Smash Bros.. Mega Man and Geno seem like two of the most requested characters from Capcom and Square Enix, so maybe they’ll finally appear in the next game. Whatever the Big N has planned for SSB, you can be sure that there will be more characters from other companies included. Who will make the cut is anyone’s guess, but at the very least expect Sonic and Snake to return.

No Clones

It’s true, everyone wants a big roster, but clones are the side effect of shoving too many characters into one game. Characters like Ganondorf are screwed out of having an original set of moves, and that’s why clones need to be removed once and for all. We know that certain characters are going to have a similar arsenal of attacks, and we expect characters like Fox and Falco to fight similarly, but at the very least tweak them so they have some original moves. Luigi is a great example of a clone turned awesome, and while him and Mario have similar fighting styles – they have some different moves which make them each handle quite differently from one another.

We were promised that clones in the game would be addressed in the previous title, but that didn’t happen. Hopefully Nintendo gives themselves enough lead time to give each character their own list of attacks. In all honesty, we just want Ganondorf to whip out his sword and impale Zelda, and is that really too much to ask?

Super Smash Bros 4 Alternate Costumes and Skins

Alternate Costumes

One feature that I know a lot of fans would really appreciate is the ability to change a character’s costume or even skin. The closest thing Brawl had to this ability was the option to change between Wario’s WarioWare outfit, and his “classic” look. I’ve always wondered why other characters didn’t have their own outfits when there are so many possible looks for all of these characters. Better yet, if Nintendo did do away with a few clone characters then they could show up as an alternate skin for others on the roster. Mewtwo with Lucario as an alternate skin is an option that would surely satisfy fans of both characters – while still maintaining room on the roster for others with a more unique move set.

Speed Option

One of the biggest complaints about Super Smash Bros. Brawl was that it removed the speed that was established in the title’s predecessor, Melee. This was done to open up the game and make it appeal to a wider audience. While this reason makes a lot of sense from a sales point of view, there were a lot of people who just went back to playing Melee to fulfill their hardcore needs. The best thing that can be done in the next Smash is to include an option that simply allows anyone playing to decide which type of speed they would like to play on. If there was a switch located in the options that just allowed players to change the tempo of the game between Brawl and Melee then it would satisfy every type of consumer that the game appeals to.

Better Story Mode

Okay, I’m an absolute diehard Smash fan, but I’ll be the first to admit that Subspace Emissary was awful. Every stage was almost the exact same, it only allowed two players to play at once, and it was super short. No one really expects a lot from any fighting game’s story, but Subspace Emissary could be turned into something that is a lot of fun. The ability to play four-player co-op through the whole mode would be enjoyable, but the best thing the developers of Smash 4 could do would be to add some variety to the levels. Each platforming adventure between boss battles was nearly identical, but if they put as much detail into each level as they do with each stage then each section is sure to feel fresh and new.

Super Smash Bros 4 Downloadable Content

Downloadable Content

Add-ons are something that has always seemed to elude any Nintendo game, but that’ll be something the developers will be aiming to change with Project Cafe. There is a lot of money to be made with add-ons and you can be sure that any DLC release for the next Super Smash Bros. would sell like hot cakes. We understand that Nintendo is under a very strict schedule to complete games, but if they offered DLC then it would benefit both the fans and the company’s bottom line. The downloadable content could include new trophies, items, stages, costumes, and even characters that weren’t able to make it into the final game – due to a lack of time.

That’s our list of things that we here at Game Rant would love to see incorporated into Super Smash Bros. 4 on the Wii 2. Odds are that you, the reader, won’t agree with every suggestion that we have posted, but that’s why we have a comment section. Be sure to let us know what you want in the next Smash, and which of our suggestions you thought made less sense than Rebecca Black’s Friday.

E3 is less than a week away, and if Nintendo does plan on revealing the next game in the Super Smash Bros. franchise – that will be the place to do it. Nintendo’s press event will begin on June 7th, and we know that you probably won’t be in attendance so feel free to check out Game Rant for our live coverage of the conference as it unfolds.

  1. So freaking excited for Tuesday. I hope (and think) that that Nintendo’s next consle will be the bomb.

    • What about no tripping!

  2. Agreed on every point. Nicely done, Riley. :) I long for the day I can play as Mega Man in one of these games.

    • Thank you, sir. Glad you liked it :P
I’m hoping they announce it tomorrow, while I’m in attendance. I then have an appointment time with Nintendo, and if they do reveal the next Smash then are there any questions you guys would like to ask? I’d love to hear them.
Word on the street is that Project Café’s Smash Bros. is called Super Smash Bros. Strife. Not sure if I like the name.

  3. Hey man, I just wanted to clarify one of your points. You seem to misunderstand the complaints about Brawl. Yes, the comments can be generalized as “too slow”, but to assume this referred to literal speed would be shortsighted. After all, Brawl did have adjustable speed.

No, what made Brawl a travesty of a game, slower than snails in molasses and so unplayable that it barely manages to fit the definition of a “game”, was something a bit subtler: absolutely no balance, no way to attack without being at an immediate disadvantage or Meta Knight, no way to have any fun at all under any circumstances and was singlehandedly responsible for every natural disaster this year.

I am not being sarcastic or ironic or mocking Melee or Brawl fans in any way shape or form. I am merely stating facts with the same sort of indifference that someone might comment on the weather or the results of basic arithmetic. To suggest that Brawl + speed = Melee is to suggest that 1 + 1 = 3, and I felt I should correct this as you would a small child’s homework, lovingly and with hope that one day you will see the light.

You see, Melee offered such a rich and dynamic competitive experience because attacking and defending were nearly equally balanced, and the defending player had to work harder than the attacking player, i.e. an attacking option required the defending player to take an active response. This lead to the attacking player having the advantage in most scenarios, creating the exciting, strategic, skillful and deep metagame that has enchanted the world’s fighter fans for nearly a decade. As you said, Brawl made changes to appeal to a wider audience. Apparently this includes children under the age of 1, elderly over the age of alive, dogs, trees, inanimate objects, abstract concepts, etc, etc. In Brawl, the defending player not only has an overwhelming advantage in nearly every conceivable scenario, but he maintains this advantage completely passively. A player need only button mash, or set down the controller and be somewhat near it, or perhaps just consider the idea of the controller from afar, to repel even the most genius approach from the opponent. Recently in a test of masochism I played a match of Brawl against the idea of the ghost of Johnny Cash. Although I succeeded in doing a frame-perfect series of moves, the abstract series of neural connections in my brain representing the memory of that famous country crooner managed to deflect them with ease, even though it had the obvious disadvantage of having no way of effecting the outside world in any way shape or form. Playing a game of Brawl is like flipping a coin in zero gravity and the first person to lose patience loses. It is literally the worst way I could ever imagine spending my time.

In conclusion, I hope the next Smash Bros game contains a handwritten apology dotted with Sakurai’s tears, and maybe blood. Our god is a vengeful god and I can only hope whatever depraved crime caused him to punish us with Brawl will eventually be forgiven. I beg of you to do your part and apologize for the sullying of Melee’s good name you have done in this article.

    You heard the bird.

    • So, wait… I don’t understand…. You didn’t like Brawl?!

    • That guy must really like Mewtwo.

      • Eat Ham’s comment made my day

    • Uhhhh when did I “sully Melee’s good name”?
I think that hardcore gamers loved the “mechanics” (i.e. the speed in which the players moved, attacked, and blocked) a lot more in Melee, but not everyone could really get into the game and play it well. That’s why Brawl changed that, and apparently it worked well because it sold over 10 million units.
I loved the speed (or whatever you talked about for five paragraphs) in Melee, and I was sad to see it replaced. That’s why there should be an option. There are plenty of mods available for Brawl that make the game feel more like Melee, and if the ability to jump between modes was included then anyone could jump in, play and have fun.
Brawl was by no means a bad game, and if you actually think Nintendo should apologize for making it then you couldn’t have played very long – if at all.
I don’t mean to criticize you, and I certainly don’t mean to make you feel offended, but I just wish to correct your ridiculous accusation in the same manner that one would correct a puppy who has just soiled the rug.
I realize that you feel Brawl betrayed you, or some other event of biblical proportions occurred because Brawl felt different than Melee, but don’t ask me to apologize because we don’t see eye-to-eye on the topic of Smash Bros.

  4. Didn’t read the whole long comment by the bird. But I think he’s major beef was the character balance. Something like this could be corrected with DLC, along with other exploits which make the gameplay a cheaper experience.

  5. Yes, GameRant people, it’s true; Super Smash Bros is coming to not only the new console Wii U, but it’s also, for the first time ever, going portable with the 3DS. The day we’ve finally dreamed of is here!

  6. How I hope Mewtwo returns

  7. Dang.

  8. My Skin Ideas:

.Toon Link, Young link, & Classic Link
.Mario & Dr. Mario, & All Stars costume Mario
.Skyward Sword Link, Twilight Princess Link & Ocarina of Time Link,
.Classic Sonic, Regular Sonic, & Shadow
.Toon Gannondorf & Twilight Princess Gannondorf
    .Pikachu & Pichu
    .FR&LG Pokemon Trainer, & HG&SS Pokemon Tainer,
    .Olimar & Louie

Also With the Skin Idea, Each character starts with only has 4 basic Skins (Red, Blue, Green, and Regular Color (Unless if the regular color is R, B, or G, then an aditional color) But you earn more Colors by either playing the character a certain amount of rounds, or by beating Classic Mode or something.

    Ex: Mario
    Start With:
    Red (Basic)
    Blue
    Green
    Yellow

Unlock Mario (Brown) by: Play 10 Rounds as Mario
Unlock Mario (White) by: Clear Classic Mode as Mario
Unlock Dr Mario (White, Red, Blue & Green): Play 50 rounds as Mario
Unlock Dr Mario (Black): Play for an hour using any Dr Mario Skin

If Nintendo did this Idea, I’d be nonstop playing trying to unlock all the skins

    • I love that Idea! It would be an extra challenge to the players. I think character cutomization that allows you to choose your moves(Evenly set)would also be a good inclusion. Along with appearance.

      • They did say they wanted to make it a more personal experience.

  9. I would hate to see a character get cut from the SSB saga, but Snake, and Sonic, were a terrible choice. Yes, Sonic is Mario’s “rival” debate between fans, but where does Snake come in? I’m sure that MegaMan, or someone else from Metroid, F-Zero, or Fire Emblem would fit easier. Also, if they want to cut some characters, cut Nintendo’s trophy boy, Mario. There are 6 characters from the Mario Bro’s series(7 if you count DonkeyKong.) I would say no characters that have games that are graphic(Blood, Guns, ect.) to keep the feel to the SSB originality. Suggested Characters for SSB4: Bowser Jr., Mega-man, Zero, Mewtwo, Knuckles, Skull Kid, Masked Link(Goron,Zora,Deku), Viewtiful Joe, Krystal, Roy, Waluigi, Pokemon Trio(Mudkip, Grovyle, Blaziken), and Birdo.

    • :/

Snake was the best thing about brawl

    • WHAT?! Cut MARIO?! Blasphemy! I have never heard such an atrocious thing!

    • No Mario, but yes Bowser Jr.?

  10. I would love to see Issac from golden sun in the next game

    • Same here

  11. Game loading time needs an update. I understand, the game was huge, but it took too long to load. Mewto needs a comeback but with a different move set. I’d rather see him then Lucario, though he did have an original moveset. I also expect Roy back. I don’t get why he got cut instead of Marth. And Ness had better not go away. I would like to see Mega- Man and perhaps Knuckles or Tails. Tails is more popular but I have trouble imagining a move set. Knuckles is easier. Though both would probably look pretty good in battle. Personally, I hope a character like Sothe gets in. I can see a move set looking a bit like Sheik but with some major differences like counter. I would also like to see some representation of Sin and Punishment on the roster. There was a cameo appereance in the form of an assist trophy, but a fast paced shooter would fit very nicely in the line-up. There really does need to be a better balance between attack and defense. Too often battles turn into boring, lengthy streams of acrobatic dodges. It’s no fun when two players are left but neither can land a blow. I would also like to see a bigger difference between the Pokeballs and assist trophies. They were just too alike for me. Also, while I’m on Pokeballs, I’d like a better balance between the pokemon. I hate that they just spew out Bonsly, Weaville, Latios/Latias and a few other rather ordinary Pokemon. None of those guys are particularly useful (except Latios who is just way too common to the extent that it’s not fun). I would personally like to go back to the first 2 generations. (especially because of Heart gold/ Soul Silver). I don’t think many people exactly care for the recent generation of Pokemon. I would like to see maybe Cyndaquil and Onix needs to come back. Scizor would be nice but needs a touch up. But I would really love to see Eevee come in. Evolution is a huge part of Pokemon that he would represent. He would also add an element of randomness. The idea is that Eevee potentially evolves. With seven evolutions, you could have potentially eight different effects. I would like to divide them up by generation, with Jolteon using pin missle, Vaporean using maybe hydro pump or water spout or aqua jet, Flareon could use flare blitz. Espeon and Umbreon could invert the colors. Umbreon could make it black and white while Espeon the colors like what happens in Luigi’s final smash. I could see Leafeon causing flowers to sprout on every one’s head while Glaceon causes a hail storm to hurt everyone. Finally, I think players need some tweaking to make them more balanced. I find that older characters have had their powers diminished. Pikachu’s up A just isn’t as satisfying as it should be. In contrast, the likes of Pit and Metaknight are slightly superior.

  12. Don’t get me wrong, Brawl was awesome. But it didn’t reinvent Super Smash the same way that Melee did. Hope game 4 has the same impact. However, the handheld part worries me.

  13. its all about ike and sonic…AND rob.

  14. I would cry giant tears of joy if Sora and/or Roxas made it into the next super Smash Brothers, or at least Chrono.
