After much speculation building up to today’s Super Smash Bros. focused Nintendo Direct, the presentation didn’t fail to surprise fans with its fair share of announcements. While many gamers hoped for character reveals, which Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai delivered, many were anticipating Nintendo to final narrow down its very broad ’2014′ release window. Fortunately, the Big N did just that during the 39 minute showcase.
Sakurai confirmed today that, despite previous reports that both the Wii U and 3DS versions would launch alongside one another, handheld owners will be able to partake in the new Super Smash Bros. ahead of the home console iteration’s release. Exactly how much sooner wasn’t specified, but the developer did confirm that the 3DS will hit store shelves later this Summer. Wii U owners, on the other hand, will have to remain patient until Winter 2014 for some good ol’ fashioned home console brawling.
While there will be differences between the two versions, namely the stages and handheld-exclusive ‘Smash Run’ mode, the roster will remain exactly the same between the two versions. This means that the entirety of the roster will have to be revealed sooner rather than later if there truly won’t be any surprise combatants awaiting Wii U owners.
Specifics pertaining to when in Summer and Winter 2014 these games will launch are still missing in action, but Nintendo and Sakurai should be further detailing their imminent release at some point in the near future — likely this year’s E3. Still, it’ll be interesting to see if there are any special things added to the Wii U installment as an incentive to purchase a very similar game on Wii U months after release, especially if Nintendo is banking on the title to move hardware.
Will you be picking up both versions of the new Super Smash Bros.? Which version looks more entertaining: Wii U or 3DS?
Super Smash Bros. will hits the 3DS in Summer 2014, while the Wii U version will land in Winter 2014.
