Have you ever wished for more variety in your Super Mario Bros. retro gaming? Ever thought it'd be better if, instead of bouncing on the heads of goombas and koopa troopas, you could just shoot them directly in the face with Samus Aran's arm cannon or stab them in the gut with the Master Sword?

Well, you're in luck.

Thanks to amateur game designer Jay Pavlina you can trade-in your copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii in favor of his free Super Mario Bros. Crossover flash game.

Basically, the game allows you to revisit the original 8-bit Super Mario Bros. but with six playable characters including Mario, Samus, Mega Man, Bill R., Simon, and Link. In addition to the ability to stomp heads, many of the new characters have a distinct power, inspired by their respective titles, which they can use to take out any of Mario's traditional enemies.

The flash game does not allow for embedding - so make sure to head over to New Grounds to check out Super Mario Bros. Crossover.

Basically, we're talking about an 8-bit Super Smash Bros. without any distracting trophies or CDs to collect - well except for the coins.

Sure, the additions make the game less challenging - which will undoubtedly ruffle the feathers of Super Mario die-hards but, for the rest of us, Super Mario Bros. Crossover is a great opportunity to revisit an old friend - before you totally own him with new weaponry.
