Who would win in a fight: Darth Maul or Anakin Skywalker. While we'll never know the official answer to that question, at one point there was to be a fighting game that would let fans play out those dream Star Wars scenarios.

And no, we're not talking about a sequel to Star Wars: Masters of the Teras Kasi either, this was to be a fighting game all its own. Unfortunately, it never got past the prototype stage.

The current president of Robomodo -- developer of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD -- John Tsui shared a video on Twitter that shows the prototype in action. In it, players can see two of the Star Wars prequel trilogy's major characters, the aforementioned Maul and Skywalker, do battle.

While this is only a prototype the general idea behind the game seems like something fans would eat up. The gameplay itself looks very rough, but that is expected of a prototype. With a little polish, the game's core mechanics could be easily expanded to make the game look like a Star Wars: The Old Republic CG trailer.

Star Wars Fighting Game Prototype

Even at a very basic level, though, the game has some cool things going on: namely the mixing and matching of lightsaber and force-based attacks. And seeing the Emperor's throne room as a potential fighting arena calls to mind all the iconic locales the game could have used. Imagine being able to recreate the Empire Strikes Back's final fight, but have Luke kill Darth Vader right then and there.

Alas, the game was not meant to be, and that might be for the best considering Robomodo's track record with beloved franchises (they were also responsible for Tony Hawk: Ride and Tony Hawk: Shred). But now that Disney is in control of the Star Wars franchise, and appears to be jumping feet first into creating new properties, the likelihood of a Star Wars fighting game increases. Maybe whatever developer takes on such an IP can use this video as inspiration.

What do you think of the Star Wars fighting game prototype? Would you like to see this concept expanded into a retail game?
