During the Star Wars Celebration last week, Electronic Arts and DICE shed some light on the upcoming game Star Wars Battlefront. During the event, the publisher and developer discussed how the game will be similar to past Battlefront games while also sporting a few new additions.

EA and DICE also revealed that players will have the opportunity to play as iconic characters like Darth Vader and Boba Fett. However, as in previous Battlefront games, players won’t have constant access to these characters. Rather, players will take the role of Rebel Alliance and Empire soldiers, fighting each other in 40-player arenas, and will be able to take control of special characters after accomplishing certain tasks or reaching set score goals.

These special characters will come with their own strengths that players can use to support their team, and if needed, turn the tides of battle in their team’s favor. Considering the size of the Star Wars universe, we doubt Darth Vader and Boba Fett are the only special characters available. So we have put together a list of the other heroes and villains we would like to see as playable characters in the game. [NOTE: Since EA and DICE are focusing the game around the original Star Wars trilogy, our list only includes those who were present in the original three films.]

-

Luke Skywalker

Star Wars just wouldn’t be the same without the series’ greatest hero, Luke Skywalker. Skywalker progressed from a confused and lost young man to a powerhouse Jedi over the course of the three original Star Wars movies, and thanks to hints from the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie trailer, it seems the Jedi has only grown stronger and more capable as the defender of the light side of the force.

Given his role in the movies and as a playable character in the previous Battlefront, it seems a no-brainer that Luke will be a playable character in the new Star Wars Battlefront. With the focus of the game on the original Star Wars trilogy, we assume the characters will resemble the age, skills, and abilities from the movies. Hopefully, though, EA will include a more mature, better experienced version of Luke Skywalker for players to control in future DLC add-ons.

Han Solo

Han Solo

Who doesn’t love the handsome, brave bounty hunter Han Solo? His daring nature and spot-on shooting make him a prime candidate as a playable character in the new Star Wars Battlefront.

Unlike the Jedi and Sith playable characters, Solo doesn’t use a lightsaber, opting instead for his blaster pistol. But, since the special characters all have some unique abilities, we expect EA and DICE will outfit the bounty hunter with some kind of jetpack or other useful device. He may also have access to the datapack from Star Wars Battlefront II, which lured enemies within a certain radius, then exploded.

We would also like to see Solo have his Rally ability back, or something similar to it. In the previous Battlefront game, Solo had the ability to rally the troops by increasing the defenses of those allies within a certain distance of him while Rally was activated.

-

Yoda

The green Jedi Master may be small, but we all know how quick and deadly Yoda can be. Plus, his unique perspective on the Force can be very useful.

Sure, EA and DICE could recycle the same Force Push and Force Pull the Jedi Master had in Star Wars Battlefront II, but we would love to see them try something else and give Yoda new abilities. One possible ability could play off Battlefield's Levolution by allowing Yoda (and Darth Vader or Darth Sidious on the dark side) the ability to change the landscape of the map through special Force powers.

While no word has been shared about any type of Levolution events in Star Wars Battlefront, it wouldn’t be hard to add it using Frostbite 3, considering it’s already been done in the Battlefield games. And it would be a great change of pace if only certain special characters could trigger the events.

-

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Luke Skywalker’s trainer and mentor seems a likely candidate for Star Wars Battlefront. As with Yoda, we would love to see EA and DICE incorporate new skills and abilities into the character that go beyond Star Wars Battlefront II.

In terms of his powers, it would be cool to see Obi Wan's influence assist teammates while in vehicle combat. For instance, Obi-Wan could help players in X-Wings take down enemies, just as he helped Luke Skywalker take down the Death Star in the original trilogy. That would definitely make for a unique update to the Battlefront series.

-

Chewbacca

Who hasn’t taken a moment to attempt a Chewbacca impersonation? The raggedy beast, who goes by ‘Chewy’, is as popular a character as any other in the Star Wars universe. That makes him a prime addition for Star Wars Battlefront.

In addition to his bowcaster and guided rocket weapons from Star Wars Battlefront II, we imagine the Wookie will also have his Rage ability, which gives a significant damage bonus to surrounding allies.

We would also like to see EA and DICE try something new with Chewbacca, whether it’s giving him the ability to run fast or climb quickly to catch enemies off guard, or the ability to single-handedly take down small vehicles like the AT-STs with a few strikes.

-

Emperor Palpatine

Besides Darth Vader and Boba Fett, Emperor Palpatine is the best known villain from the original Star Wars trilogy. From his scratchy voice to his terribly wrinkled face, the Emperor is known and hated by almost every Star Wars fan alive. However, his unique abilities and strength with the dark side of the Force make him a prime playable character for Star Wars Battlefront.

If Palpatine is playable in the game, we have no doubt his abilities will include Force Lightning and Force Choke. He used both these abilities in the movies and in Star Wars Battlefront II, so it stands to reason he’ll have them again.

As with other characters who span both trilogies, we would love to see the younger Palpatine arrive in future DLC packs along with the other major characters from Episodes 1 through 3.

-

Lando Calrissian

While Lando Calrissian doesn’t play a huge role in the films, his presence is strong enough that most Star Wars Battlefront players will know who he is. Like Han Solo and Chewbacca, Lando wouldn’t have the same abilities as the Jedi and Sith, but his unique character could bring with it fun and interesting skills.

For instance, in the movies Lando begrudgingly helps the dark side before returning back to the good side to help Luke Skywalker and company. This could easily translate to a unique spy skill in Star Wars Battlefront. Lando could take on the look of an enemy soldier and sneak past enemy lines and learn what’s happening deep inside enemy territory. This type of ability would likely be timed, so the player would have to work quickly, but it would be a fun way for players to strategize together to beat the enemy.

Maybe if we’re lucky, EA and DICE would also give Lando the ability to choose one enemy character and freeze them in Carbonite, keeping them in place for a certain amount of time.

And More

Darth Maul

The above Star Wars characters are seemingly strong choices for Star Wars Battlefront, however we imagine EA and DICE won’t stop there. We already know there will be additional content from Episode 7, so we would love to see special characters added from the new movie. We would also be somewhat interested to see heroes and villains from Episodes 1 through 3 make appearances in future DLC packs, depending on who it is. Characters like  Mace Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, Darth Maul, Count Duku, and General Grievous sound like prime candidates, just as long as EA and DICE keep Jar Jar Binks as far from Star Wars Battlefront as possible.
