The guys over at Atari and Cryptic studios must be doing something right, because the newly released Star Trek Online reportedly launched with 1 million accounts. As a comparison, World of Warcraft sold 240,000 copies in North America on the day of its release, November 23, 2004. Obviously this isn’t a direct comparison, the popularity of MMOs has increased by quite a large margin since then, much of that being as a result of WoW‘s success, but it is still something to note.
Many recent MMOs have struggled to compete with World of Warcraft, but I think this game may have what it takes to successfully live alongside it. Star Trek Online had a well received beta leading up to the games release, and offered a unique “lifetime subscription”. The offer gave committed gamers the chance to pay $239, before the game’s release, for lifetime access (or until the servers shut down).
I personally am not a big Star Trek fan (though I did love the new movie), but nonetheless I am pretty interested in seeing what the game is all about. Were any of you readers part of the 1 million?

Does Star Trek can surpass world of warcraft? Do u need some money from wowgoldteam.com, that's enough
I am completely astonished at Star Trek's success. The game, quite frankly, is nothing impressive… yet Star Trek fans worldwide are willing to pay for more of the brand. Some franchises are just that powerful I suppose.
There are 1 million users registered at their website, not 1 million copies sold.
I never stated that there were 1 million copies sold
When I brought up the fact that WoW sold 270,000 copies sold on day one, I just wanted that to give an idea of how many people were interested in / playing that game at launch.
