Have you ever just wanted to walk a mile in Captain James T. Kirk’s shoes? Sit at the helm of the USS Enterprise while facing down Romulan raiders as everyone’s favorite Vulcan Spock tells you your best options?

While fans may have to wait another year or so before director J.J. Abrams’ next Star Trek film, Paramount Digital Entertainment is giving you the chance to play as Kirk or Spock in their recently announced Trek title.

Simply called Star Trek, and based off the 2009 remake, the title is being produced by developer Digital Extremes - the same men and women behind games like BioShock 2 and The Darkness 2. Taking place right after the first film, the story is set to follow Kirk and Spock as they stop "a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy."

Die-hard Trekkies won’t have to worry about the story, since God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk has been working closely with the film’s writers Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman to make sure that everything is well within the Star Trek universe - while also fitting nicely between the films. Digital Extremes is also working closely with Bad Robot, Abrams’ production company, to guarantee that the title will have the same amount of action and suspense you would expect from the franchise.

This is more of an unexpected and rather surprising announcement, and one that could work wonders for the franchise - or doom it to mediocrity like so many other videogame movie tie-ins.

Star Trek, which will arrive on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, is scheduled for release sometime in 2012 and will “heavily emphasis” cooperative play - meaning that if you can’t work and listen to your Vulcan buddy… you’re going to be in sorry shape. The game is going to be on display next week at E3, which means you can bet that Game Rant will be bringing you more details as soon as they're available.

Do you think that Paramount Digital can pull it out, or do you think that this is just another way to try and get more “bang for their buck?”

Star Trek will dock at a retailer near you in 2012.
