During its E3 2016 press conference, Sony reveals a teaser trailer for a new Spider-Man game being developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4 by Insomniac Games.

Sony didn't pull any punches this year and made sure its E3 press conference focused on the games, introducing top tier titles like Days Gone, God of War, and many others. While rumors indicated that a new Spider-Man game was in development, Sony confirmed the news with a flashy teaser trailer showing the web-head moving around New York City and battling the bad guys. Shockingly, the developer attached to the project is none other than Insomniac Games.

The trailer opens with a monologue from Peter Parker, over very detailed and sweeping views of New York City. The trailer then pans up to reveal Spider-Man wearing a unique suit with a large white spider symbol on his chest and white gloved hands across the familiar red and blue. City traversal appears to be a major element as the trailer showed off Spidey's acrobatic and free form moves as he slings across the city and uses his webbing to take out some thugs during a car chase and what appears to be a bank heist.

Details on the title, including a release window, are scarce at the moment, but Sony and Insomniac Games have confirmed that that this game will tell a brand-new and authentic story featuring a more experienced Peter Parker. It is also a PlayStation 4 exclusive title.

Insomniac has proven they know how to handle open world traversal, having released Sunset Overdrive on the Xbox One back in 2014. Movement and world traversal were massive elements in that game as chaining together moves built a combo meter unleashing more devastating moves. Instead of walking along the ground, players were encouraged to utilize agility and velocity to perform different movements like wall running, air-dashing, acrobatics, and parkour moves. Many of these systems should translate well to a new Spider-Man game, who is a character known for flashy traversal.

Prior to E3, rumors began to circulate that a new Spider-Man was in development at Sony, which is technically true based on this reveal, but the big surprise here is the studio in charge of the project. Sucker Punch, who last released inFAMOUS: Second Son back in early 2014, has been incredibly quiet since, which is why many rumors pointed to them as the developer behind this new super hero game. Since the studio behind the inFAMOUS and Sly Cooper franchises isn't actually on this project, the question remains as to what the studio is up to.
