After a surprise announcement last week at The Game Awards, fans have been hungry for more details on the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11. One question on fans' minds is if Mortal Kombat 11 will feature guest characters, like we've seen in past games, and as it turns out, famous comic book creator Todd McFarlane may have given us an answer.

McFarlane recently participated in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, where he was asked by a fan if his comic book character Spawn will be a guest fighter in Mortal Kombat 11. McFarlane replied, "I believe he's on his way..." which some fans have taken as a confirmation that Spawn will indeed be part of the upcoming fighting game's lineup.

Of course, it's possible that McFarlane is just joking with his Reddit post, but if Spawn did show up in Mortal Kombat 11, it wouldn't necessarily be all that surprising. After all, Spawn has an established history in the video game industry, appearing in a number of games themed after the character and his comic books, as well as a guest appearance in both SoulCalibur 2 and its HD remaster.

Furthermore, a new Spawn film is in active development, with McFarlane serving as director and the horror-focused production company Blumhouse producing the project, with Jamie Foxx attached to star as Spawn. As production on the new movie ramps up and its marketing campaign begins, it may be mutually beneficial for the filmmakers and NetherRealm Studios to include Spawn in Mortal Kombat 11 as a guest character.

While Spawn is far from confirmed to be in Mortal Kombat 11, the potential is there, and would make a lot of sense. In the meantime, there are exactly three characters revealed for Mortal Kombat 11 at the time of this writing, and they are Raiden, Scorpion, and Shao Kahn, with the latter being a pre-order bonus.

In the meantime, we know that Mortal Kombat 11 will have a Kombat Pass, which will include DLC fighters, so if Spawn isn't featured in the main roster, he could be added to the game at some point post-launch. Perhaps more information on the Kombat Pass will come at the January 17 Community Reveal Event that NetherRealm is hosting for the game next month.

Mortal Kombat 11 launches April 23, 2019 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
