Sony Boss Talks Lack of PS4 Console

After the big PS4 event earlier today, Sony Boss Shuhei Yoshida was on hand for many members of the press to ask him some big questions. While he wasn't exactly forthcoming with big answers, Yoshida did speak candidly about some concerns gamers had prior to the unveiling (like the blocking of used games) and some that arose after the event.

One the major questions gamers had after the event was why Sony didn't show a console? It was a PS4 event, yet there was strangely no PS4 in sight.

Obviously, this isn't the first time that a major console has been unveiled, but the device itself has not been talked about. Just look at what Nintendo did with the Wii U — they showed the new controller first, then let gamers take a gander at the console.

That same approach is being employed by Sony now, who wanted the focus in terms of hardware to be on the DualShock 4, Sony's newest iteration of their iconic controller. Because the presentation spent a good deal of time talking about the PS4's 'Share' feature, it was important that Sony show off the controller to better illuminate how sharing content works.

And, according to Yoshida, they still want to have more new stuff to show gamers in the future, perhaps at E3 2013. While the DualShock 4 isn't as big a leap as the Wii U gamepad was compared to the Wii-mote, it's still packaged with some new cool features. And so Sony decided to make this first unveiling more about the controller, new games, and a few new services, rather than actually showing off the PS4.

Here's specifically what Yoshida told Kotaku about the unveiling strategy:

"As far as the DualShock 4 is concerned we wanted to do the live demo. And we were like, yeah, we have to show the controller, because it's awkward not to show the controller when someone is doing a demo. And also the feature that the DualShock 4 has, the share button, is a very key idea behind the design of the PS4... We really wanted to explain what we've done with the DualShock 4, but as far as the system itself we have to keep something new for later. Otherwise you'd get bored."

For all we know, the PS4 design hasn't been finalized. However, Sony better start thinking about that quick, because Holiday 2013 is going to come sooner than they think.

Did you find it strange that Sony did not show off the console? Do you think the DualShock 4 was a more important showpiece?

Sony's PS4 will hit store shelves this holiday.
