With exactly 95 days until the start of E3 2012 it’s high time that rumors start to swirl regarding the next consoles for both Microsoft and Sony. While Sony has been very adamant about not revealing, or talking, about the PS4 one has to believe work on their next-gen console has begun. Microsoft, on the other hand, is believed to be hard at work on their next console, currently code-named Durango, and we hope to see a big reveal for it in May.
For Sony, the details that are the most important pertain to the architecture of the console, its GPU and CPU, rather than specific names or launch titles. Since Sony still has a fair amount of time before an official announcement will be made, sources point towards 2014 as the most feasible time period, one has to imagine they are just getting started in terms of selecting a chip set or graphics processor.
The most recent rumor regarding the processor for the PS4 suggests that Sony has done away with their highly touted Cell chip – which in and of itself is an admission that their expensive gamble didn’t pay off – and will be looking to AMD for a CPU and perhaps even a GPU. As Kotaku reports, by turning to AMD for both a CPU and GPU Sony can turn to developers and give them baseline examples of the type of tech they are exploring that are currently available in the market today.
Obviously there will be some slight differences, but it can speed up the development process, and maybe secure Sony some more enticing launch titles.
On the Microsoft side of the rumor ticket, it is believed that the company held an Xbox 720 event this week for a large population of developers. One of the developers believed to have been in attendance was Crytek, the folks responsible for Crysis and more recently Far Cry 3, as indicated by a since deleted tweet.
There’s been no confirmation of the London event taking place, but since the event was referred to as a Durango event, the assumption is that Microsoft has begun showing off their new console to developers. And if they’re showing it to developers now it would make sense that gamers might get to see it a little later this year.
It’s extremely exciting times for gamers with each of the big three in various stages of production on their next-gen console. While one is gearing up for potentially a Holiday release (Nintendo), its biggest competitors are at different stages of the same cycle they just experienced.
How do you feel about Sony turning to AMD over Nvidia for their GPU? When do you think that Microsoft will officially debut the next Xbox?

AMD FTW!
True that my man.
Maybe it’ll be cheaper at launch this time around. Either way I’m going with PS4 next-gen.
Same here.
Maybe the could make it to where they use actual video cards, like a PC, and they can be taken out and replaced with better cards in the future.
HOPE *-*
I agree with the motherboard being more PC like. If ps4 going to be 10 yr plan (like Ps3) then we will need to be able to upgrade more then hard drive. We will Need RAM, GPU(or Graphics card). That way PS4 can keep up with pc gamers.
I agree, it would also be nice if they made things such as mods available and possibly creatable from the console.
Guys, if PS4 was THAT upgradable, there wouldn’t be a 10 year plan. It’d go beyond that. And could harm the success of PS5. Unless PS5 GPUs wouldn’t be compatible with PS4, and vice versa, thus forcing you to buy a PS5.
Would be nice. I doubt this would ever happen. It’s easier to develop for a set system rather then a upgrade able system.
Sounds great, I’m for the switch to AMD for the PS4,even since I’m a long time PS3 user, this means alot of things.
1.PS4 can be a little cheaper than than PS3 (meaning that instaed of a high price range from something like $500 or $600 it will be cheaper like how the Xbox 360 price was and is.)
2. Many developers will be able to work with the Sony PS4 tech (there were so many developers that said that the tech aka the Cell chip processor was to hard to work with and “it was a pain in the ass” which is why they work on the 360 more times, this can mean more developers will work with and on the PS4 and have more possiblities for launch titles.
3. Since they’re doing this change to a PC-styled console they should have the opition to upgrade the chips like a PC. Do something to work closely with AMD and create exclusive chips or cards for Sony, like a “Sony line” or “Sony set”
AMD is only developing the CPU and possibly the GPU, doesn’t mean it’ll be upgradable. Nvidia developed PS3′s GPU and that wasn’t upgradable.
I know AMD is working on the CPU and I feel they will work on the GPU, cut cost and make a console that is still strong and powerful but also cheaper on many ways, for the consumer and cheaper to make. I know its a long shot to ask for upgradable innards,I was in a way doing wishful thinking, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be those users that won’t do it themselves.
I am not saying upgrading a Chip CPU. what we are saying is the Graphics card, Ram and HDD be upgraded. With AMD doing the CPU and GPU chip. They have some of the best Graphics cards out in the pc market. They also have an Eight-core CPU. If sony wanted to build something that competed with the PC market and brought more gamers to their console then they need to let us upgrade. The big downfall off the PS3 is the Cell processor, it is different to write code for. if it was more like a PC then there wouldn’t be much loss when game ported over.
haha, that’ll never happen; upgradable? I hope it never happens. If that were the case, then it’d be just another wannabe computer. Furthermore, if upgradability were to happen, i would predict a lot of driver conflicts and what not – not to mention hardware failure. If u want something upgradable, then get a PC(im sure u have one). Think first before u post
Sounds great. But, I really want to know whether the ps4 and so on will be backwards compatible. It’d be a shame if they didn’t allow you to play games from previous consoles.
sony are greedy and will make you buy them again just like they did with the PS3 after the first run. I’m lucky, I have 2 PS3s that are backwards compatible with all ps one and 2 games but my mates are not so lucky! £14:99 for Crazy Taxi, I have it already with better music and more options
CPU AND GPU! YAY!!!!!
