It's hard to believe it's already been 20 years since Sony unleashed the original PlayStation console onto the world. Released in Japan on December 3, 1994, it made waves with its crisp 3d graphics and diverse launch lineup. Sony Computer Entertainment has since gone on to expand upon this beloved grey box with countless other platforms, both console-based and handheld, and unsurprisingly have become a staple of the modern gaming market.
In order to celebrate the brand's 20 years of success in the world of video games, Sony is treating gamers to a truly impressive sale that spans their history. Bringing together PS1 and PS2 Classics, handheld experiences from the PSP and Vita, and PS3 and PS4 essentials, there's something for everyone in this sale. Having kicked off on Jan. 13, the sale will run until Jan. 19. With over 60 titles on offer at up to 60% off (up to 75% off for Plus subscribers), it's hard not to get excited by the notion of adding a few more gems to one's collection.
While the lure of some of the PS4's well-known offerings might seem enticing, the inclusion of a number of classic PS1 and PS2 titles is sure to draw quite a bit of attention to the sale. With gamers patiently waiting for Sony to bring support for these titles to their new console, one can only hope that this highlight of their history as part of the brand could eventually dovetail into something bigger and better. From classic titles like Twisted Metal 2 and Tomb Raider to contemporary classics like Persona 4 Golden and Uncharted 3, there's something for every taste. Considering the recent news that The Last of Us 2 is being put on hold temporarily, the chance to jump back into some old favorites will likely help to lessen the sting.
Regardless, between this sale and Sony's unveiling of their PS1-themed PS4 console, the amount of pride that Sony has for their gaming brand is evident. A cursory look at the sale also shows an incredibly diverse catalog of games and quite a few titles that are sure to evoke some strong feelings of nostalgia. Sony may have recently run into issues with their PSN service, but it's hard to deny the fact that the company has come a long way and still has quite the future ahead of them.
