Sonic the Hedgehog dunks on Mighty No. 9 with a savage tweet from his official account following the Keiji Inafune-developed game's less than stellar launch on Tuesday.

Launch day is usually an exciting milestone for developers and fans alike, but that wasn't the case for Mighty No. 9 on Tuesday. Developed by legendary producer Keiji Inafune of Mega Man fame following a successful Kickstarter, the game finally saw official release after several lengthy delays. Unfortunately, the game is already receiving poor reviews amidst complaints about technical problems and other issues.

Inafune himself felt bad enough about the state of Mighty No. 9 upon release that he seemed to apologize for the game during a Twitch livestream on Tuesday that was supposed to celebrate the launch. He even told fans that the game in its current state is 'better than nothing.'

As that comment about the game made the rounds in the gaming press yesterday, plenty of fans took to Reddit and other platforms to pile on the criticism. But the worst blow came from an unlikely source: Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sega maintains a popular Twitter account @sonic_hedgehog that is known for making troll posts while communicating with followers as if it's really Sonic himself that's running the account. After Inafune's 'better than nothing' comment went viral, Sonic moved in for the kill.

The post has been retweeted almost 20,000 times in less than 24 hours. It's also worth noting this isn't the first time Sonic has left tread marks all over Mighty No. 9. About a month ago, the game was heavily criticized following the release of a new trailer that was... not great. The cringe-worthy commentary included a line about an 'anime fan crying on prom night.' Sick burn, except the fact that there are plenty of video gamers who are also anime fans, and so it kind of felt like the game was insulting its own player base. That's when Sonic stepped in to offer his support:

The pizza joke is funny on its own, but what really puts the boot down is that 'pizza' is exactly what some fans said Mighty No. 9's awful looking explosions looked like in the new trailer. That's one savage hedgehog.

While Sonic's latest tweet is going viral, it's worth noting that this was already planned to be a pretty big week for Sega's blazing blue mascot. Thursday is the 25th anniversary of the original Sonic the Hedgehog and the Sonic account has been posting memes for the last several days, building up hype for the big day.

While most fans are reacting to Sonic's shade with humor, some are also taking the time to point out that it takes a lot of nerve to take Mighty No. 9 to task when so many of Sonic's own games over the last two decades have had their own problems. One fan took to Twitter following Tuesday's launch of a 25th Anniversary Sonic the Hedgehog Humble Bundle to clap back at the hedgehog:

Mighty No. 9 is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One.
