Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fifth DLC fighter is coming soon, and speculation is running rife on fan forums as players take guesses at who it'll be. With current Ultimate fighters running the range from contemporary characters such as Bayonetta, Solid Snake and Incineroar to classic 1980s icons such as Mr Game & Watch and the Mario Brothers, there are a lot of potential places that the next DLC could come from.

Working to shorten this list are various Smash Bros leakers, both reliable and fake, who are steadily deconfirming both individual characters and whole franchises. Most recently, Vergeben, one of the most active and reliable of these leakers, has posted on the GameFAQs forum to confirm that whoever the new fighter is, they won't be from a franchise owned by either Bandai Namco or Level-5.

Who is Ruled Out?

Assuming Vergeben's information is accurate, the deconfirmation of Bandai Namco and Level-5 removes a few of the most speculated-about characters out there. Taking Bandai Namco from the line-up rules out popular classic characters such as Ms Pacman, as well as fighters from the Soul Calibur and Tekken beat 'em ups, or more modern titles such as Dark Souls and Katamari.

While not as impactful as the removal of Bandai Namco, the absence of Level-5 franchises from the running also rules out a few important characters. In particular Professor Layton, from the titular series of puzzle games, as well as characters from the Yo-Kai Watch and Ni No Kuni franchises. This latest leak follows on the heels of another from leaker Sabi, which quashed rumors that the DLC would be Lloyd from the Tales of Symphonia JRPG.

Which Characters Can Still Be DLC?

With leakers such as Vergeben and Sabi having already dismissed Gordon Freeman, Dante and Doomguy, as well as large companies such as Falcom, Ubisoft and Nippon Ichi Software, the list of potential fighters for the new DLC is growing shorter by the day. Those notable names still in the running include Crash Bandicoot, Overwatch's Tracer, Master Chief from the Halo series, and the legendary Tomb Raider herself, Lara Croft.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's fifth DLC will add a new character to those available to purchasers of the Fighters Pass, joining big names such as Joker from Persona 5, Banjo and Kazooie, Terry from Fatal Fury, and an amalgamation of the four Dragon Quest protagonists.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
