Skyrim PS3 DLC Development After Dragonborn

Earlier this week Dragonborn, the third DLC offering for Bethesda's highly touted Skyrim, made its debut on the Xbox 360, bringing with it plenty of new quests and, more importantly, the ability to ride dragons. In addition to the release of Dragonborn in its Xbox-exclusive state Bethesda also revealed that the PS3 and PC versions of the DLC should hit their respective digital marketplaces early next year.

However, despite a confirmation that Dragonborn is headed to the PS3 there are still gamers out there wondering when the first two Skyrim DLC expansions, Dawnguard and Hearthfire, will make their way to Sony's console. And finally, we have some clue as to Bethesda's developmental plans behind the DLC, but unfortunately still no release dates.

What we now know is that Dragonborn is taking priority on the PS3-side of DLC development, and will be released first before anything else. The good news, however, is that Bethesda plans to go back to Dawnguard and Hearthfire once Dragonborn "ships" — they aren't just skipping those two expansions altogether.

Here's the direct quote from Bethesda's blog:

"On PS3 in particular, we turned our attention to Dragonborn, as we thought it was the best content to release first, and we didn’t want folks to wait longer. Once it’s ready to go for everyone, we’ll continue our previous work on Hearthfire and Dawnguard for PS3. Each one takes a lot of time and attention to work well in all circumstances and all combinations of DLC. Once we have a better idea of release timing and pricing, we’ll let you know."

It's still the type of non-announcement that PS3 gamers have become accustomed to, but anytime Bethesda mentions the PS3 and Skyrim DLC, fans should take notice. Bethesda games and the PS3 have historically not played nicely together, but this lack of post-release content — and a huge save bug that appeared late last year — have assuredly made multiplatform owners gun shy about ever going PS3, or even PS4, with future purchases.

At this point, though, PS3 owners have made their bed and they're forced to accept the decision they made. A smart move on Bethesda's part would be to significantly discount Dawnguard and Hearthfire on the PS3, or better yet offer them for free as a goodwill gesture. Anyone that plays these DLC offerings is surely a die-hard Elder Scrolls/Bethesda fan, and stuck with the company after being essentially neglected, so why not reward their loyalty?

Are you happy to learn that Bethesda plans to go back to Dawnguard and Hearthfire once they're done with Dragonborn? Or is it too little too late?

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim — Dragonborn is out now for the Xbox 360, and should be hitting the PS3 and PC early next year.
