‘Skyrim’ Patch 1.3 Released, Fixes Multiple In-Game Issues

There is not much left to say about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that has not already been said. It is quite simply a fantastic game, garnering public praise and great reviews and even a Game of the Year honor at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards.

At the same time, Skyrim is being drug through the mud due to technical problems with the retail release and subsequently patched versions of the game, mainly dealing with texture issues in the Xbox 360 version and large saved game files on the PlayStation 3. A new patch released today promises to address many of the game’s issues. Then again, things didn’t turn out so well the last time Skyrim got updated.

The 1.2 patch was supposed to bring more stability to the long-term prospects of playing Skyrim on the PS3, as well as correcting a host of graphical glitches (among other issues) in all versions of the game. For Xbox players, the graphical troubles have seemed to subside for the most part. Unfortunately, the 1.2 patch brought more problems than fixes, especially for the PS3, where players noticed that while the patch did alleviate some of the problems surrounding the saved files, the problem still existed, resulting in game freezes and crashes.

Among other issues with 1.2, the “addition” of backward flying dragons and the complete removal of magical resistances stand out. Gamers playing as Bretons suddenly found themselves with all the negative aspects of a High Elf, but without the extra magic to offset it.

Joshua Sawyer, Project Director on Fallout: New Vegas, spoke out and said that Bethesda should have been aware of the issue on the PS3 version because it has been present for awhile, and was definitely an issue on Fallout: New Vegas. Bethesda Vice President of PR and Marketing Pete Hines emphatically denied the claim by Sawyer, and instead offered players “workarounds” for the issue at hand.

Where does that leave players now? The Skyrim 1.3 update has been released by Bethesda and is currently up on Steam and Xbox Live, and as of this writing, is “in the hands of Sony” for the PS3 version. Here is the list of what fixes are included, and unless specified, the fix covers the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 version:

  • General stability improvements
  • Optimize performance for Core 2 Duo CPUs (PC)
  • Fixed Radiant Story incorrectly filling certain roles
  • Fixed magic resistances not calculating properly
  • Fixed issue with placing books on bookshelves inside player purchased homes
  • Fixed dragon animation issues with saving and loading
  • Fixed Y-look input to scale correctly with framerate

Bethesda is also rolling out support for 4-Gigabyte Tuning (Large Address Aware) next week for our PC users.

Interestingly absent from the list of fixes is the saved game/memory issue, a fault that is still plaguing the PS3 version. As one who has played this game exclusively on the PS3 version, I can vouch first-hand that Hines’ workarounds do little to offset the larger issue at hand. Skyrim is a wonderful world to immerse yourself in, a world that never gets dull, so the lack of support for the main issue here is rather disappointing. Hopefully the 1.3 patch and subsequent follow-ups will make the game more stable and playable on the PS3.
