That moment in Shazam! when Billy's foster siblings all banded together and got their own grown-up superhero looks was arguably one of the most memorable and heartwarmingly exciting elements of any DC film in the past decade. Apparently, director David F. Sandberg was fully aware of how that excitement would eventually lead to a leak of the family's costumes in Shazam 2 (he was right to worry, seeing as the actual Shazam costume had already been leaked), so he decided to get out in front of the whole thing.
On June 21st, Sandberg posted a tweet featuring the "Shazamily" in their full updated glory as seen in the upcoming sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, showing off their new superhero suits and cheekily eliminating any chance of a potential leak before they were ready to be revealed. "Don't know how long we can keep the new suits from leaking so here's a pic I took the other day," he said in the caption, amusingly suggesting that the whole thing was a spur of the moment decision. Not entirely out of the question, considering this is the same guy who made an entire movie featuring Zachary Levi convincingly acting like a teenage boy.
For the most part, the outfits keep the same basic designs they had in the first Shazam! But a closer look reveals a much more textured appearance on all of them, almost giving the material a kevlar-like appearance. The muscles on several of the family members also seem less exaggerated this time around, though that could just be the lighting. Though perhaps the most noticeable change is seen in the costume of Mary Bromfield (played by Grace Fulton). While the original film saw the character (originally played by Michelle Borth in her superhero form, with Fulton now playing both versions of Mary in Shazam 2, as confirmed by Sandberg in the same Twitter thread) in a bit of a cheerleader-inspired outfit, her new suit seems to take a few minor cues from that of Gal Gadot's take on Wonder Woman, particularly in the skirt design.
2019's Shazam!, considered by some to be the perfect Christmas movie, followed young Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel) as he was tossed around through the foster system while never really fitting in. Soon, his life turned upside down after he was given the power of a superhero, allowing him to turn into a superpowered adult version of himself known as Shazam (played by Levi). Throughout the film, he learns the value of responsibility and family, as his new foster family continually proves their support of him, eventually resulting in Billy and his foster siblings all sharing the power of Shazam in a climactic final battle. Also, the movie is very funny. Always a plus.
While there's still a rather agonizingly long time between now and the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, it's helpful to see small tidbits like this. The sequel looks to be rather ambitious, with heavy-hitting stars like Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu showing up to play daughters of the Greek god Atlas, because this is clearly one franchise that doesn't like to do things on a small scale. Mark Strong, who played the villain in the first film, also confirmed that he won't be returning for Shazam 2, and he seemed oddly happy about it.
So hopefully this drip-feed of new info about Shazam 2 will keep sustaining eager fans as they continue to wait for what feels like an eternally upcoming sequel. But if not, they can always watch Zack Snyder's Justice League again. That always takes up a good chunk of time.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently set for a June 2nd, 2023 release date.
