Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is still getting more secrets revealed about the making of Marvel Studios' first foray into the martial arts genre. Shang-Chi introduces many new elements to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which add a great deal of depth to the world that the company is creating.
Recently, fans were given a look at how the Great Protector was created for Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi. The Great Protector was a hidden Dragon that fought to keep the realm of Earth safe from invading forces. The Grear Protector was also a big component of the final battle, which offered an impressive display of CGI and also opened the door for many more Shang-Chi elements to be implemented into the MCU's world.
The Shang-Chi behind-the-scenes photos are courtesy of Before and Afters, and they reveal a wide range of blue screen and green screen usage in order to make the Dragon appear lifelike. The Shang-Chi images also reveal the life-size props that were used to capture the scale of the creature. The fight scene was epic and much bigger than one might expect from a martial arts film, yet it felt right on brand and provided a really epic finale for audiences.
The actors did a good job at capturing the characters' fear and exhilaration as they were flying hundreds of feet above the ground on a creature thought to have been a mere legend. It's hard sometimes for actors to make the CGI look real when they had nothing to work with on the set, but the film did a solid job at managing under these circumstances. Some have criticized the final battle for being yet another CGI fest for the MCU, but the behind-the-scenes photos prove a lot of work went into delivering a spectacular sequence for moviegoers.
Shang-Chi has been doing well at the box office and is on set to overtake Black Widow as the #1 movie in the U.S., which again shows that Marvel is just in competition with itself. One day there may be a film that will dethrone the Marvel era but as of right now, there has yet to be a solid contender.
Some are anticipating an end to the superhero genre while others think it has barely scratched the surface. Many are expecting the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other villains such as Galactus or Doctor Doom to breathe new life into the MCU, although with how Shang-Chi is doing, it seems Marvel doesn't need to rely on its heavy hitters in order to keep selling tickets.
