Over the past month Volition has been slowly revealing information about its upcoming open-world sequel Saints Row: The Third in preparation for the release of a trailer. Said to include the first look at in-game footage, that trailer has now released, and we can confirm it does indeed contain said footage.

Unfortunately, in true Saints Row fashion, this Saints Row: The Third trailer isn’t without its tongue-in-cheek moments. We don’t want to spoil the contents of the trailer for you, but let’s just say it hit us like a blow to the unmentionables.

For some time now there has been a debate over how Saints Row: The Third will try to recapture its audience after so many great open-world games have been released. Many thought that they might ditch their over-the-top antics in favor of a more serious tone, but early screens for the game proved that rumor to be completely false.

This Saints Row, just like the two iterations before it, is going to put players in control of some of the oddest weapons and into some of the most peculiar of situations. We can’t say the trailer sheds enough light on how far this entry ranks on the absurd scale, but based on the trailer’s content the sky seems like the limit.

Without further ado, we give you the first look at real in-game footage from Saints Row: The Third:

Okay, so that wasn’t exactly the type of trailer gamers were expecting, but it does establish that Saints Row: The Third keeps in line with previous entries. The look of the game might be a bit more mature, and maybe even the storytelling itself has evolved, but at its core this is still the Saints Row gamers know and love.

With the game’s release set for the end of this year, there is still plenty of time for Volition and THQ to show just how unique Saints Row: The Third will be as compared to titles like Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire. We just hope the next trailer focuses a little bit more on the gameplay and a lot less on hitting certain humor-related beats.

What do you think of this first trailer for Saints Row: The Third? Was it enough to pique your interest or did the joke fall flat?

Saints Row: The Third is set to release at the end of this year on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
