Pokemon that have lost their mothers. Other Pokemon who need to stay away from water because if the fire on their tail goes out, it dies. Too many Pokemon have these sad entries that deserve to be mentioned. Maybe it will make players think twice when they abandon them.

Updated on October 25, 2022, by Rain Egan: Pokemon has long been appreciated by fans for its diverse cast of catchable creatures. As the franchise reaches over nine hundred Pokedex entries, the teams behind the beloved games have had to get creative with the designs and backstories of each one.

With each release, more sad Pokemon with more tragic tales and dark secrets are discovered. With the upcoming release of Scarlet and Violet, more of these upsetting Pokedex entries are sure to make an appearance. As the release date grows near, it's a great time to revisit some of the most interesting and the most heartbreaking Pokedex entries.

20 Appletun

Screenshot of Appletun from the Pokemon Anime.

This sweet-looking dinosaur is Appletun - a Shield-exclusive Pokemon introduced in Generation VIII, and a bit of a fan favorite. It's designed to look like an apple pie, likely inspired by the homely cottage setting of its home region Galar. Unfortunately, it has quite an upsetting past.

'Its body is covered in sweet nectar, and the skin on its back is especially yummy. Children used to have it as a snack', reads its rather straightforward Pokedex entry. Because Pokemon can seem so lifelike and full of personality, it's quite disturbing to read of one being used as a simple playground snack.

19 Galarian Corsola

White Corsola in evolution screen

Galarian Corsola is far different from its other form. Looking at its picture, one can easily tell that Galarian Corsola is sad. Why? "Sudden climate change wiped out this ancient kind of Corsola. This Pokemon absorbs others’ life force through its branches".

That's right, climate change has gotten the better of this Pokemon, and it is now dying. It's no wonder that this Pokemon is so sad. Its entire species died and now all that remains are the ghosts of what they once were.

18 Cubone

Cubone in a field looking depressed

Cubone has always been portrayed as a sad Pokemon. After reading its Pokedex entry, it's no wonder that it is portrayed that way. Its Pokedex entry reads, "This Pokemon wears the skull of its deceased mother.

Sometimes Cubone’s dreams make it cry, but each tear Cubone sheds makes it stronger." Yep, it wears the skull of its dead mother around because it can't bear to be apart from her. The other entry states that its cries echo through the skull it wears. Poor Cubone.

17 Yamask

Yamask carrying a facemask

The spirit of a person from a bygone age became this Pokemon. It rambles through ruins, searching for someone who knows its face." Yamask is always searching for someone, anyone, who will remember its face. Too bad the spirit is from so long ago that nobody will ever recognize its face.

The mask is said to be the face this Pokemon had when it was human. It's hard to believe that after years and years, this Pokemon is still carrying its face around just trying to get someone to notice it.

16 Lapras

A screenshot of Lapras from Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Introduced in the very first generation and appearing in every main series game since then, Lapras is a Pokemon that most fans of the series will have a soft spot for. Its first Pokedex entry, however, is extremely sad: 'A Pokemon that has been overhunted almost to extinction. It can ferry people across the water'.

This heartbreaking entry hits home for many real-life animals. But fans of Lapras, rejoice! Pokemon Moon's Pokedex entry revealed a happy ending for Lapras: 'These Pokemon were once near extinction due to poaching. Following protective regulations, there is now an overabundance of them.'

15 Bewear

Bewear holding arms out for a hug

Bewear only wants to care for its trainer, so much so that it wants to give them hugs. Too bad Bewear shouldn't do that. Bewear's Pokedex entry states that if it hugs its trainer, it can shatter its trainer's bones. Take a look at its entry.

RELATED: Ways Digimon Became Less Like Pokemon Over Time

"Once it accepts you as a friend, it tries to show its affection with a hug. Letting it do that is dangerous—it could easily shatter your bones." Yep, sorry Bewear, but no hugs allowed. Trainers probably don't want their bones to be shattered anytime soon.

14 Spoink

Three spoink bouncing around rocks

Spoink is literally tortured by the spring attached to its bottom. "Spoink bounces around on its tail. The shock of its bouncing makes its heart pump. As a result, this Pokemon cannot afford to stop bouncing—if it stops, its heart will stop."

It may be biology, but Spoink definitely got the bad side of the deal. Nobody wants to continuously bounce to stay alive, but Spoink must. Maybe think twice before showing it in a Pokeball. Will that kill it? Hopefully not.

13 Honedge

A wild Honedge appearing in Pokemon X & Y

Honedge is one of a number of object-based Pokemon in the franchise. Designed to look like a sword and a shield, it's no wonder this Generation VI Pokemon was brought back after skipping a generation for Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Frankly, Honedge has an alarming number of disturbing Pokedex entries considering how few games it's actually been in. Perhaps the most haunting of all entries comes from Pokemon Sword: 'Honedge's soul once belonged to a person who was killed a long time ago by the sword that makes up Honedge's body'. Unsettlingly enough, it's not even the only Pokemon that used to be a dead person.

12 Komala

Komala sleeping in a palm tree

"It remains asleep from birth to death as a result of the sedative properties of the leaves that form its diet." Poor Komala doesn't get to experience any of the joy in life. Evolution has forced this Pokemon to experience everything while it sleeps all the way from birth to death.

The other entry states that when it enters a deep enough sleep "it stops moving altogether." So, it basically needs to remain in a slight sleep that it can never wake up from. Sleeping Beauty would even be upset about that.

11 Muk

A screenshot of the Pokemon Muk from the Pokemon anime hugging Ash.

Muk, who is essentially a sentient heap of sludge, has somewhat of a cult fan base due to its appearance in the anime. That being said, even staunch Muk haters would be moved by its Pokedex entry: 'Their food sources have decreased, and their numbers have declined sharply. Sludge ponds are being built to prevent their extinction.'

Like Lapras, Muk is on the verge of extinction. Hopefully, future games will also provide an update on the declining Muk population. After all, even Muk deserves love!

10 Amaura

Amaura in a frozen forest

Poor Amaura is another Pokemon that was just brought into the world to die. The Pokemon world is filled with great technology. Some of this tech is so great that they can revive Pokemon from fossils. Too bad that doesn't help Amaura.

Its Pokedex entry states that "it’s not expected to live long because of the heat of the current environment." So what, the player is just supposed to watch this adorable Pokemon suffer from the heat of this world it didn't ask to be brought into? Sorry, that's not the family-friendly game Pokemon claims to be.

9 Espurr

Espurr staring during a battle

Espurr is constantly in a struggle. People can just see it in its eyes. That blank stare never goes away. That thousand-yard stare is thanks to the devastating power it holds inside itself. "Though Espurr’s expression never changes, behind that blank stare is an intense struggle to contain its devastating psychic power."

Poor Espurr is clearly struggling and nobody ever stopped to try and help. Maybe now players will hang onto this Pokemon and not leave it behind to be on its own.

8 Sinistea

The Pokemon Sinistea on a blue background.

Sinistea is a newer Pokemon released in Pokemon Sword and Shield. As Galar is based on the United Kingdom, it feels only right that this generation would introduce a Pokemon that seems to be a sentient cup of tea. Sinistea also has two versions: one for its 'antique form' and one for its 'phony form'.

The antique form of this Pokemon has a pretty terrifying Pokedex entry: 'it absorbs the life force of those who drink it. It waits patiently, but opportunities are fleeting—it tastes so bad that it gets spat out immediately.' Still, nothing particularly sad. The entry for the phony form, however, states that 'this Pokemon is said to have been born when a lonely spirit possessed a cold, leftover cup of tea'. It's the use of the word 'lonely' that really seals the deal.

7 Charmander

Charmander crying in the rain

Anyone who has watched the Pokemon anime knows the sad truth about Charmander, but here is a refresher. "From the time it is born, a flame burns at the tip of its tail. Its life would end if the flame were to go out." One of the saddest ways to live.

At all costs, Charmander must protect its tail from fizzling out, or it will die. It brings back memories of Charmander in the show, desperately holding a leaf over its tail to prevent the rain from hitting it while Charmander waits for a trainer that abandoned it.

6 Banette

Pokemon Banette holding dolls of pichu and jigglypuff

Banette is a strange Pokemon. Banette is a doll that was cast away and left to decay. This caused resentment to fester inside of it until it sprang to life. Now its sole purpose is to find that person who threw it away.

Its Pokedex entry reads, "Resentment at being cast off made it spring into being. Some say that treating it well will satisfy it, and it will once more become a stuffed toy." The saddest part about Banette isn't that it is constantly seeking revenge for being cast aside, but that it just wants to be loved by a trainer.

5 Nosepass

Pokemon Nosepass standing in forest with eyes closed

Nosepass has always been an interesting-looking Pokemon with a massive magnetic nose. While some Pokedex entries for it seem rather harmless, it is the entry in Pokemon Ruby that reveals this Pokemon's depressing nature.

"Nosepass's magnetic nose is always pointed to the north. If two of these Pokemon meet, they cannot turn their faces to each other when they are close because their magnetic noses repel one another." That's right. Two Nosepass' can never meet each other because they repel one another away. It's depressing to think that these creatures can never find their soulmate.

4 Parasect

Pokemon Parasect in a forest

Parasect is pretty well known since it debuted in Generation One. The original Pokedex entries are pretty depressing for this bug/crab creature.

RELATED: Best Pokemon GO Clones, Ranked

"A host-parasite pair in which the parasite mushroom has taken over the host bug. Prefers damp places." Basically, Parasect is a zombie that has no mind of its own and is completely taken over by the fungus on its back. That must be a pretty depressing life.

3 Jigglypuff

Pokemon Jigglypuff singing into a microphone

Another one of the original Pokemon, Jigglypuff, has been used in the cartoon as a source of comedic relief. In the show, Jigglypuff always tried to sing but puts everyone to sleep. Of course, this makes Jigglypuff angry, so she draws on everyone's faces with a marker.

The Pokedex entry from Pokemon Emerald sum things up the best. "Nothing can avoid falling asleep hearing a Jigglypuff's song. The sound waves of its singing voice match the brain waves of someone in a deep sleep." For a Pokemon who wants nothing more than to sing its little heart out, it's depressing to know that nobody will ever enjoy it since they will be asleep.

2 Phantump

Pokemon Phantump flying away from pokeball

Poor little Phantump's Pokedex entry from Pokemon Sun makes them sound horrible. "These Pokemon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died in the forest. Their cries sound like eerie screams."

Basically, children go out to play in the woods, get lost, die, and then their spirit inhabits a tree stump that creates this Pokemon. To make things worse, its cries have to sound like screams. This means nobody will ever find them since they will most likely run away from a scream.

1 Mimikyu

Pokemon Mimikyu standing on rocky path

Mimikyu has become so popular since it first appeared in Sun and Moon. This adorable Pokemon wears a costume that resembles Pokemon's mascot Pikachu, but there is a rather depressing reason why it does.

"It wears a rag fashioned into a Pikachu costume in an effort to look less scary. Unfortunately, the costume only makes it creepier." This Pokedex entry only scratches the surface of this Pokemon. Many other entries state that anyone who even catches a glimpse of what is under its costume dies shortly after.
