Runescape 3 Release Date

Since its humble beginning at the turn of the millennium, MMORPG classic RuneScape is one of the longest-running online games. Chances are, most people who have connected to the internet at some point in the 2000s have tried the free-to-play MMO, which has consistently run on Java applets within a browser window. After 9 years since its last major update, UK indie developer Jagex has announced the latest overhaul, running on HTML5 and sporting a plethora of new features, updated graphics, and massive world events for players to take part in.

The July 22nd update is titled RuneScape 3, and will move away from the Java format the game was previously tethered to. Using HTML5 specifically allows for a wider range of compatibility with browsers, and ensures smoother graphics processing with better support for GPU hardware. The virtual world of Gielinor enters its sixth age with the new game, receiving several anticipated updates as well.

Players can become a more integral part of the world and its inhabitants, changing the course of Gielinor's history in large-scale events. Phil Mansell, Executive Producer of RuneScape 3:

"We received fantastic praise from our passionate RuneScape community when we first revealed the development of RuneScape 3, so we’re thrilled to be able to confirm the 22 July launch date for the most significant update in the game’s history. Our pioneering use of HTML 5 technology continues to place us at the forefront of browser-based gaming innovation, and will result in a truly amazing gaming experience for players."

RuneScape has a long and interesting history, its community having survived over 12 years despite fierce competition in the MMO market, and an acquired notoriety of game-related exploits and bugs. Jagex hopes to build on its previous success and breathe new life into the game with its RuneScape 3 update, which may soon become available for tablets and other mobile devices in the near future. For now, players hoping to get in on the action can sign up for the recently opened beta. So Ranters, are you ready to take your MMO experience to the next level?
