There is no way to rationalize this. Nothing I can preface it with to help it make any more sense. So, here we go.
“We’ve just had some shocking news from an inside source at Nintendo: Sonic will be a playable character in Mario Galaxy 2! Wha?”
Read it again. Let it sink in. Who would make such a bold claim, you ask? Believe it or not, this little gem appeared, bright and early, in the February 5th Twitter feed of UK Nintendo mag NGamer. Is it true? Who knows. NGamer is published by Future, arguably the largest publisher of games mags in the world. Their portfolio includes every official console specific magazine on the racks here in America. They are not in the business of just making stuff up. But Sonic in Super Mario Galaxy 2? Broken in a tweet? I just don’t know.
The mechanical differences between the two characters would seem to make this a tough fit. Sonic’s reckless speed just doesn’t make sense in Mario’s precise platforming world. It seems highly unlikely that Nintendo’s Japanese development teams would simply throw in Sonic as a sort of palette-swap for Mario, ignoring all of Sonic’s trademark abilities. But… wouldn’t it be awesome if it were true? If Nintendo’s first party teams went all-in on making Sonic a real part of the game, we could be seeing the first truly great 3D Sonic game.
In any case, consider my interest in Super Mario Galaxy 2 refreshed. What about you? Would Sonic in Galaxy 2 be the best thing ever, or a sign of dwindling relevance for both characters?
Super Mario Galaxy 2 will release exclusively for the Nintendo Wii in quarter four of 2010.

That would be pretty epic. Co-op gameplay?
Even though I loved Galaxy 1, I am still kinda dissapointed with this games existence. It feels like Nintendo is lazy manning this next Mario game.
I had predicted this after playing Mario Galaxy. There was something about the world-space of 'Galaxy that just felt more like Sonic than it did Mario. I'm not so sure as this won't be something more akin to the SNES game Donkey Kong Country 2 and the pair of Sonic's shoes (as well as Earth Worm Jim's gun!) in the credits, but honestly I do think Sonic's mechanics would fair well with Mario Galaxy's gravity-defying gameplay.
If it's true, well then I've got to take Mario Galaxy 2 a little more seriously, as this would mean Nintendo's actually serious.
dwindling relevance
what about luigi
Super Mario Galaxy was an awesome game. I really can't wait for the sequel. Don't know what you mean about dwindling relevance, I don't see how a plumber stomping goombas, or an echidna collecting rings was ever relevant. They will always remain cultural icons, and will probably always hold a market with children.
Two words: HELL NO!!!! It's called Super MARIO Galaxy 2, not Super Mario and Sonic Galaxy 2. Don't get me wrong because I love both Mario and Sonic. It's one thing for them to put Sonic in SSBB, the Olympics, or maybe even Mario Kart. But for them to put Sonic in a MAIN Mario title, even if it's just a cameo role, HELL NO!!!! It would completely RUIN everything (not just the Mario series, but the Sonic series too)! It might even make Nintendo go out of business because only about half of the fans would still buy Mario games! This is THE STUPIDEST mistake Nintendo could ever make! I will have a heart attack and die if this rumor is true (as I am a huge Mario fan)!
I don't know if it would absolutely ruin the game, but it would fundamentally change it. And no question that it would be really, really hard to get the formula right. But, if anyone could do it, it would be Nintendo's first party teams in Japan. As for the Sonic series, I hate to say it, but I think the 3D games are pretty well ruined already.
