Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are bringing Rise of the Tomb Raider to Steam and Windows 10 starting January 28, with added support for 4K resolution systems.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was just one of several Xbox exclusives released this year, and just this week Microsoft announced it crossed the 1 million sales mark during the 2015 holiday season. That's certainly nothing to be disappointed with. But Rise of the Tomb Raider was never meant to be a console exclusive for long, with plans to bring the game to PC in January having been revealed just last month. Today Square Enix has made it official, announcing Rise of the Tomb Raider will hit the PC on January 28.

On top of the release date announcement, Crystal Dynamics will also be adding an extra feature to the PC port: 4K support.  Who else was expecting another HairWorks announcement? In all seriousness, Crystal Dynamics has been releasing games on PC for over 20 years. 2013's Tomb Raider was one of the best looking PC titles of the year and still stands up excellently. With Rise of the Tomb Raider already winning visual awards for its console release, its PC version has high expectations - 4K or otherwise.

In a prepared statement, Crystal Dynamics co-Head of Studio Ron Rosenberg offered this olive branch to PC gamers:

"PC players are a passionate, devoted audience and we know they’ll embrace the version created for their systems."

It may not be the, "Please forgive us, we love PC gamers the most!" apology that some PC gaming enthusiasts would like to see, but this is probably as excited as one can expect the folks from Crystal Dynamics to be. They wouldn't want to offend the powers that be holding the contract between Microsoft and Square Enix.

As well as the standard release, Square Enix will also be offering a Collector's Edition of the PC version of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Just because the Xbox version of the game came out first doesn't mean PC gamers don't deserve respect as collectors, too! The $149.99 Collector's Edition includes the $89.99 Digital Deluxe Rise of the Tomb Raider bundle with both the game and DLC Season Pass, a 12-inch Lara Croft statue, steel case, and replica Lara journal and jade necklace.

Rise of the Tomb Raider also has a pre-order bonus on PC. Pre-order holders will instantly unlock a free copy of 2013's Tomb Raider as well as the Rise of the Tomb Raider DLC Remnant Resistance Pack. The pack includes the "Remnant" outfit for Lara, and in-game items including animal skins and ancient Byzantine armor. The "Moon Shadow" Heavy Pistol skin is also included, as well as the rare "Bullet Resistance" foil card.

The message should be clear - Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have always planned on releasing Rise of the Tomb Raider for PC. The Collector's Edition, pre-order DLC, 4K support, and so on make it abundantly clear that at no point was the PC version of the game ignored, deprioritized, or cheapened.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is currently available on Xbox One and Xbox One, with the PC version to launch on January 28.
