Ridley Scott's The Last Duel was released in U.S. theaters in mid-October, but audiences who opted to skip theaters will be able to watch the film on Disney Plus starting in early December.

Disney Plus Day, an event held on November 12th that celebrated the streaming service's two-year anniversary since launching back in 2019, announced the debut of some of Disney's/Marvel's big releases like Jungle Cruise and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the new IMAX aspect ratio upgrade for its Marvel films, as well as other perks such as early entry into Disney theme parks and limited-time offers for new subscribers.

In addition, Disney announced that The Last Duel will be available to stream on Disney Plus starting Wednesday, December 1st, 2021. Ridley Scott's historical drama centers on the respected knight Jean de Carrouges, who challenges his friend Jacques Le Gris to a judicial duel after Jean's wife, Marguerite, accuses Jacques of raping her. The film stars big names like Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Adam Driver, and Jodie Comer. The film is expected to perform well on Disney Plus and will hopefully open up the story to many new viewers.

The Last Duel was met with critical acclaim for its direction, the performances, and the writing (currently with an 86% on rotten tomatoes). However, it was a massive flop at the box office, as the film has only racked up $26.3 million worldwide (way off from surpassing the film's $100 million budget). Some of the film's competitors at the box office included No Time to Die, Halloween Kills, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The box office numbers are interesting, though, considering not only the filmmaker behind the camera (who is responsible for some big, award-winning films like Gladiator) but the star power in front of it. Yes, The Last Duel was up against some big blockbusters, but taking actors known for roles like Kylo Ren, Jason Bourne, and Batman and wrapping them up in an epic story seems as if it was made to be a success.

What's even more surprising is Disney Plus of all streaming services taking The Last Duel, especially knowing of the film's weighty themes and Scott recently sharing his frustration towards superhero movies and how he believes them to be too boring. Either way, at least Disney Plus is expanding its content and willing to share this excellent film.

The Last Duel is currently playing in theatres.
