For fans of the Resistance series, Resistance 3 could mean a lot of things. It could mean that what was once a flagship for the PlayStation 3 didn’t pan out, or it could mean that a very strong developer bounced back from an arguably mediocre game to reestablish the series as one of the console’s premiere titles.
At tonight’s Spike VGAs, a new trailer was revealed that gave gamers their first look at the game in action, or did it?
Insomniac almost had us fooled. The first few seconds of the Resistance 3 trailer looked like it was going to be a similar live-action trailer to the one shown before, but then it immediately jumps to an intense sequence of new hero Joseph Capelli fighting off some menacing Chimera while on a moving ship.
Take a look:
There were some looks at the new weapons and a sense for how this game will interpret Resistance 3’s story of the Midwest in ruins. One thing that is hard to tell from the trailer is whether or not the flaws from the second game are returning. Personally, the trailer seems like the right blend of fast paced frenetic action and epic moments against insurmountable odds.
What looks to be making a return are the huge boss battle style firefights that pit the player’s human character against a larger than life enemy — something that makes the Resistance series stand out from the rest. Furthermore, what does the end of the trailer mean? Could this be Insomniac hinting that there will be a hammer swinging melee sequence in the game? We sure hope so.

Honestly, I was hoping for a bit more from this trailer. At least it showed some actual gameplay. I’ve still got high hopes for the game, but compared to the commercials for Killzone 3 that aired during the awards, Resistance 3 just looked kind of flat.
I have a problem with shooters using live action or CG footage as a means of advertising their experience, since shooters just aren’t about that. If you’re going to go actual footage, then splicing it together with live action like this trailer did just seems weird. As if the developers felt that the in-game footage wouldn’t be impressive enough.
I was very unimpressed with Resistance 2, especially the horrid co-op. This one doesn’t look to have more than standard graphics but I am interested from the trailer.
