Though Resident Evil 5 might not have been the runaway success that RE 4 was it certainly brought a few important new features to the table, including co-op. Using the series’ new over-the-shoulder gunplay, cooperative play in Resident Evil 5 not only made scenarios more fun, it connected people.
And now, with Resident Evil 6 confirmed for the end of this year, many are wondering how Capcom will take that cooperative play to the next level – whether they will allow more players or if they will include new modes. There’s still no official word from Capcom, but a product listing on Xbox.com seems to suggest that Capcom’s latest Resident Evil will support up to 6 players for online co-op and up to 8 for competitive.
Now, as was said before, this news has no official confirmation from Capcom, but it seems like a logical step for the series given where it’s gone before. Unfortunately, if this 6-player co-op is true, it seems more likely this would be in a cooperative, objective-based mode rather than throughout the entire story a la Gears of War 3.
From what we know so far, it appears that the three storylines in Resident Evil 6 will focus on individual duos of characters rather than a larger group, although the game’s first trailer does show Chris storming a facility with combat team in tow. Either way, getting more players in on the Resident Evil fun is always a win in our book, and if Resident Evil 6 wants to make the player pool that much larger, we are all for it.
There’s still plenty more to be revealed about Resident Evil 6 – like who is that bald and scarred character that occupies a lot of screen time in the trailer – before talk of cooperative or online play should even start, but as a tease this is a pretty good one.
What would you like to see out of Resident Evil 6 in terms of cooperative play? Do you think that a larger team in the main story would detract from the survival horror aspect?
Resident Evil 6 is slated for a November 20, 2012 release on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

I want to see co-op but I think 6 would be way too many. For a separate game mode it would be awesome but for the campaign I think RE should keep it at 2 or atleast no more than 4. Either way I’m definitely getting this game. I don’t expect survival horror out of RE no more, I have Dead Space for that
I think more games should focus on co-op. Games like Gears or Operation Flashpoint is what I’m looking for. Dead Island is a perfect example for me.
I definitely agree. Nothing wrong with MP but they give that all the attention for most gives and very little to single player campaigns and much less to co-op.
Imagine you could hook up with 8 friends and free roam through a city in the middle east. Mission is to extract a prisoner, plan ahead and its up to you and your squad how well you execute and what happens.
Or in GTA, 8 ppl, pull off the perfect heist.
I’d buy a game that’s main focus is co-op as long as it has replay value.
Oh and I forgot to add, no scripted events or cut scenes. Missions play out in real time with intelligent AI. Maybe next gen, a man can dream.
that would b SICK!!! Yea, next gen dreams lol
How about game companies realizing that some of us still have real life flesh and blood friends that sit on our couches and play games with us, What ever happened to regular at home multiplayer? If i wanna play a PS3 game with a friend my only choices are Army of Two (which kinda sucked) or Marvel Ultimate ALliance (which ive beaten many times) Not everyones entire social life is online dammit.
No, but developers create the game for you to have the best experience. Most probably believe that cutting the screen in half just to add another player ruins the experience, and chances are if you and your friends are going to play a game together, your friend has a console too.
Cutting the screen actually uses more power. Ever notice on COD the graphics are scaled down when playing split screen?
Playing online doesn’t hinder the experience, but I agree with you, split screen is still fun. The other person may not want the game that bad.
I honestly love when games do couch co-op, I miss the days when it was much more frequent. I have so much more fun playing a game with friends or my siblings in the same room as opposed to online gaming. It makes for a much more fun time and great hangouts.
True. I wish they would fix the screen issue. For example, if you play on a big screen, the image is stretched and things still get cut off. When the screen size is reduced, they need to keep the same aspect ratio.
Well, the third guy is probably along the lines of Alice from the film franchise. A BOW that has successfully bonded with the virus, whose blood is also a cure for the infection itself. I’m just taking a stab in the dark here, but most of the time you see him, he is using more melee attacks. Seems unlike a normal human to me. I am also just putting it out there that the blonde girl with him is the presidents daughter from RE4. I don’t know there was just too much of a resemblance. But this is just pure speculation
All I do with these co-op games is tell three of my friends to buy a certain co-op game when it comes out….and we all play the game together ala playing co-op with actual people you know, problem solved.
