Well, what do you know, cowpokes? It just might be time to saddle up again. A full year after the game originally rode into town, a fresh batch of DLC is being released for Red Dead Redemption. Three fresh batches, to be precise.
Due to hit both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live next week, the Deadly Assassin Outfit, the Golden Guns Weapon Pack, and the War Horse will be up for grabs at only $.99/80 MS Points a pop. Sound familiar? They should. All three were originally offered as bonuses to folks who pre-ordered Red Dead Redemption way back at the beginning of 2010.
What exactly do you get for your money? Rockstar Games helpfully included all the details, in addition to some nifty artwork for each piece of DLC, which we are happy to pass on to you. Check it out.
John Marston’s Deadly Assassin outfit causes your Dead Eye meter to regenerate at twice the speed. With more Dead Eye, you have more time to place each shot with total accuracy, making you the deadliest gunslinger in any fight.
Available for use in the Red Dead Redemption Single Player story, the player who wields the Golden Guns receives more Fame for each kill. The more Fame you get, the more in-game side missions become available. So there will be more opportunities to duel, more kidnapped townsfolk to rescue and you can bribe lawmen for less.
There are countless horses to be found in the massive world of Red Dead Redemption, but none is stronger, faster or tougher than the War Horse. Whether storming gang hideouts, exploring the wilderness for hidden treasure, or outrunning the law, the War Horse gives gunslingers an advantage in nearly every situation.
The availability of these (presumably final) pieces of DLC for Read Dead Redemption cap what can only be considered an amazing year for the game. Despite a wealth of technical quirks, Red Dead Redemption was tremendously well received both critically (Game Rant’s Red Dead Redemption review awarded the game four stars) and commercially, having shipped more than 7 million copies as of last September. Follow that with the excellent Undead Nightmare expansion and a stunning musical performance by Jose Gonzalez at the 2010 Spike VGAs, and there is just no contesting the success of the title. Could that mean a sequel is on the way? I’d take that bet.
Until any sequel news makes its way out of Rockstar HQ, the celebrated developer has a number of other projects on deck. Up first, the ambitious L.A. Noire, which seeks to do for 1940′s Los Angeles what Red Dead Redemption did for the Old West. Then, of course, there are all those Grand Theft Auto 5 rumors floating around, from casting sheets to websites providing possible clues to the game. Fans of Rockstar’s work should have no trouble keeping busy for the forseeable future.
Will you be picking up any of next week’s Red Dead Redemption DLC? Is there anyone left who hasn’t played the game?
The Deadly Assassin Outfit, Golden Guns Weapon Pack, and War Horse for Red Dead Redemption will be available April 12, 2011, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
