It looks like two classic platformers might be making their way to the Nintendo 3DS, or at least that’s what an Australian ratings board is suggesting. According to the board, Rayman and Prince of Persia will both be arriving on Nintendo’s newest handheld in some capacity. Whether or not it will be a 3D remake of either Prince of Persia or Rayman we can’t say, but either option sounds promising.
It’s worth noting that Rayman has already made his debut on the 3DS in Rayman 3D, but that title wasn’t that well received so perhaps Ubisoft is giving the limbless hero another chance. After Rayman Origins recaptured the whimsy and beautiful design of those Rayman titles of old, I’d be happy to see what that experience could be like in 3D.
Prince of Persia, on the other hand, has various interpretations that could make for interesting transitions to the 3DS. (The ratings board also outs a Wii version of Prince of Persia as well) While the traditional side-scrolling platformer would seem like the more obvious choice for a handheld, the leaping and scaling Prince of recent years seems like a better fit for 3D visuals. I would even take the first Prince of Persia as a 3D remake.
The more likely case, as Joystiq points out, is a Virtual Console release of previous Game Boy versions of Prince of Persia and Rayman. Prince of Persia has hit pretty much every console in downloadable form, and Rayman may be flooding the market after Origins struck a chord.
Obviously there is no confirmation from Ubisoft or Nintendo regarding either of these reported titles at this point, but the prospect of seeing both of these titles in handheld form is promising. Nintendo has not shied away from updating classic titles for the 3DS, but most of those titles have been remakes of first party titles, leading us to believe two new iterations are in the works. Whatever it may be, we’ll keep you posted as more news develops.
Would you be interested in seeing Rayman (again) and Prince of Persia on the 3DS? Do you think that these should be new entries in their respective franchises or 3D remakes?
