The premise of video game-inspired films are traditionally a sore subject for gamers and moviegoers alike. Thus far no studio has managed to nail down the perfect way to translate the interactive medium onto the big screen, which has lead to many a disappointed fan awaiting blockbusters based on everything from the failed Uncharted film to the long awaited Halo movie.

With developers now keeping a close eye on their properties, the only company that appeared to be making headway in the field was Ubisoft — signing the likes of Tom Hardy to take on the role of Sam Fischer and Michael Fassbender to head up the inevitable Assassin's Creed movie. Now Sony is getting back into the fray with a new feature film starring the lovable duo of Ratchet & Clank.

According to PlayStation.Blog, Insomniac Games and Sony have both wanted to make a cinematic adventure based on the Ratchet & Clank series for a long time. Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment, the latter of which is best known for ReBoot and Beast Wars: Transformers, are assisting with the animation for the film, and are planning to have it ready for distribution at some point in 2015.

Ratchet & Clank Feature Film

The press release for the impending project describes the plot as being a rather standard affair, but should be chock-full of valuable lessons and deep space action for dedicated fans of the series.

"Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind — a foolhardy 'lombax' who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity."

Insomniac Games, creator of the Ratchet & Clank series, will have a huge role in the film's development, which is an assuring sign that it will remain as true to the original product as possible. The man responsible for penning the scripts of the more recent installments of R&C, TJ Fixman, is returning to write the script for the forthcoming feature film. Also reprising their roles in the movie are the game's voice actors (James A. Taylor, David Kaye, and Jim Ward), which should appease anyone that appreciates continuity.

To celebrate the big announcement of the new feature film, Sony has announced that there will be a massive sale on all of the Ratchet & Clank titles currently available on the PlayStation Network. The sale in question will begin during the week of April 30, so those who'd like to familiarize/reacquaint themselves with the property (prior to the film's debut in two years) can do so on the cheap.

Stay tuned to Game Rant for more info on the Ratchet & Clank movie as it becomes available. In the meantime, enjoy the teaser trailer and look forward to it hitting theatres in 2015.
