Are there too many video games coming out right now? The answer is yes, and this is after 4-5 major releases were pushed back to next year. That's not stopping the industry from steam rolling ahead as we saw yesterday with the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 5 and as we're seeing right now with Ubisoft unveiling the long-awaited next installment of the Rainbow Six  franchise, validating rumors dating back to May of this year about development of the next game.

Say hello to Rainbow 6: Patriots - note the number is now a digit- and read on for the game's cover art, logo and artistic rendering as well as story and release date information.

[Update: Ubisoft has released a video to showoff prototype Rainbow 6 Patriots gameplay footage.]

This news comes as little surprise since earlier this week it was revealed that Ubisoft had registered the domain names for Rainbow6Patriots.com and RainbowsixPatriots.com. That gave away the title. A NeoGAF user at the time had also revealed plot details of the game involving terrorists attacking wall street - interesting timing with the current state of affairs and protests in the U.S., now around the world. Said user also said there was a rendering, cover art and a logo being shared and that's exactly what Ubisoft has shared with us today.

In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, Team Rainbow faces a new and very real threat called the “True Patriots,” a highly-trained, well-organized revolutionary group that claim the American government is irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians and corporate special interests.  The True Patriots will do whatever it takes to reclaim their country.  Playing as Team Rainbow, players will face critical scenarios that will require them to make tough ethical decisions in order to stop this new breed of terrorists.

Rainbow 6 Patriots will also include co-op play and multiplayer, but there's no word yet on whether or not the single-player campaign can be played with friends like in the Vegas titles or the Ghost Recon series. Like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Patriots encourages and rewards tactical and team-oriented gameplay through new features that promote communication and coordination.

More info will be revealed in the December issue of Game Informer where we hope to get a look at gameplay and a better idea of the multiplayer features. By the time Patriots come sout, it'll be five years since Rainbox Six: Vegas 2, quite a long time compared to Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series.

Will the game return to its hardcore detailed and tactical planning roots that the franchise began with on the PC?

Rainbow 6 Patriots releases for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2013.
