The bare necessities required to log back on to the PlayStation Network and play games online has been back for a little over a week now, but today a few features for Sony’s PSN will be closed for roughly nine hours. This closure isn’t the result of another cyber attack, but is simply part of some scheduled maintenance for the online service. PlayStation 3 owners will be unable to register a new account or access their Account Management between the hours of 8am to 5pm Pacific time. Sure, scheduled maintenance is certainly a pain, but Sony has a lot of damage to repair – as many PS3 owners are well aware of – so a little bit of downtime isn’t all that bad. You’ll still be able to play online too, so it’s nothing to get upset about.
According to the official PlayStation Blog, it also seems that the PlayStation Store won’t be making its triumphant return today. The return of the currently absent PS Store was originally fingered by a leaked memo that claimed Sony had set a May 24th internal return date for the digital distribution service, but this doesn’t seem to be the case any longer.
Sony’s Social Media Manager, Jeff Rubenstein, was the one that broke that bad news today.
“For those asking about the PlayStation Store, we’re still targeting restoration of all services by the end of this month. Contrary to reports, the Store will not be publishing today.”
Going a little longer without the PlayStation Store may seem like an impossible task for PlayStation owners looking to get their shop on, but the “Welcome Back” promotion (which gives PS3 and PSP owners free games) surely makes it well worth the wait. Rubenstein also said that the service is currently targeted to return by the end of the month, so taking into consideration that there is only a week left in May, then the service will be returning sooner rather than later.
Sony should announce a return date for the PlayStation Store in the next few days, so stay tuned to Game Rant to learn when you’ll finally be able to redeem that DLC code you got with L.A. Noire.
