Following the PlayStation State of Play yesterday, Sony has released a brand new update for the PS4 system that is available to download and install immediately. The 7.01 update is meant to improve system performance, likely as a patch to ease some of the systems added in previous updates.

To download the update, all players have to do is turn on their PS4 system and either select System Software Update under the settings menu, or simply wait for the download to begin on its own if they have it set to download automatically. While it's difficult to know exactly how this update affects the system, balancing system performance is always welcome.

Update 7.00, the lastest update to arrive on PS4 before today had a number of technical and UI changes that enhanced Remote Play and Chat features. Unfortunately, 7.01 doesn't offer anything quite as substantial to the system, instead choosing to make behind the scenes balance updates that most players probably won't notice. These types of updates are still important to a systems health, however, even if they aren't as glamorous as others, or touch on fan requests to improve player quality of life.

It's not very likely that PS4 will get another comprehensive update like 7.00 any time soon, as the last major update of that caliber was released a full year before Sony launched 7.00. However, update 7.01 does still highlight that Sony is still supporting the PS4 during this transition period as more and more resources begin to divert towards developing the PS5 and its launch titles. So players who stick to their old PS4 come the next holiday season won't be left completely in the dust by the developers keeping the system running.

A number of fans have already begun taking to Twitter and Reddit to question the need for this latest update, looking to the PS4 features that fans have requested in the past that Sony still hasn't implemented. Granted, a lot of the feedback that Sony has been taking recently seems to be getting funneled towards the PS5, giving it enough exclusive features to reward players who buy the new system on release in 2020. This update may not be exactly what every fan was looking for, but as PS4 enters its twilight year, any support for the system that Sony is looking to phase out soon is a welcome sight.
