Over the next year, gamers are likely to be hit with a lot of sales numbers, as both Sony and Microsoft tout the accomplishments of their respective consoles. While sales tallies are not always glamorous, it's been more than 7 years since the last major consoles launched to tremendous success, and therefore these companies want to get out there and toot their horn, so to speak.

The latest accomplishment for Sony's PlayStation 4, however, is a big one. Sony's next-gen console has sold through more than 5.3 million units since its launch on November 15, 2013.

While some companies like to use the term sold in place of "shipped to retailers," sold through means there are close to 5.3 million PS4 consoles in gamers' hands. This is according to estimates procured by Sony in North America and Latin America since the consoles's launch on the 15th, and estimates collected from Europe and Asia starting on the 29th.

What's more impressive about the sales number for PS4 is that the console has yet to hit its native Japan. The PS4 will finally hit Japanese shores in less than a week, on February 22nd.

Rather than a simultaneous worldwide launch like the Xbox One, Sony decided to pursue the battleground markets of North America and Europe in order to get the best leg up on Microsoft that they could. And boy did they.

Sony's Andrew House had this to say about the PS4's latest sales milestone:

"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season. We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation® fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."

So, with the PS4 already making huge waves within its first 90 days or so, Sony is poised to make a huge splash in 2014 as a whole. We will have to wait and see whether Wedbush Morgan's prediction of 12 million PS4s sold by year's end is true, but Sony is certainly off to a huge start. And, if the PS4 can sell even half as well in Japan as it did during its first 24 hours in North America, then the sky is practically the limit.

Were you one of the 5.3 million that picked up a PS4 in the last three months? Where do you think sales numbers will end up by the end of the year?
